Slow computer

My computer has slowed to a crawl.
I use Norton's anti virus and I'm up to date daily. I run a complete virus check on every morning bootup.
No virus found.
However, my buddy keeps getting a virus warning on attached files he receives from me.
Please advise.
I am using an Athalon 1000 with all the bells & whistles.

Get a new larger hard drive.
Make the new one your master drive and the old one the slave drive.
Format and install Windows again on the new drive. (requires the original cd)
All your old data is still on the old drive and you have a basically, a new running system.

Way better than Norton and they do have a free AVG anti virus download as well as the $40 top of the line version.

I sent myself 2 emails, one with an attachment. The attachment gave me a Virus warning.
What is the difference between Norton 2001 daily updated and Norton 2003? I subscribe to my Nortons 2001 when it alerts me to do so.
I downloaded ANTIDOTE. During the computer scan, Norton found 197 virusss in the Windows temp files. I can't figure out why it never found them before??
Is it safe to delete all TEMP files in temp folders??????
So far I have quarantines 197 files sand who knows how many were repaired? They all start with AVP.....TEMP

Joe,
Yes, it is fine to delete the temp files in the temp folder. However, you are not getting rid of the virus just by deleting those files. There is likely a registry entry that produces those viruses in the temp folder, there is probably also an .exe file that is being executed.
BEFORE you delete the temp files in your quarentine, please write down all the information regarding what type of virus it is...ie: w32.klez.mm or whatever it tells you. Then post that information and I can help you remove it manually.

Do you ever run scan-disk and defrag? If you do a lot on the internet and then delete the temp. files, your harddrive gets a lot of empty spots on it and the computer goes crazy jumping over these spots. Running defrag takes care of this problem and will speed things up.

Yes I do the defrag thing and it takes frever and a day. 40gig drive. Never took so long before.

Yes...the down-side of those big hard drives is that it takes a long time to run the disk maintenance! Unless you're saving a lot of big music files, or running high-end games, a large drive (over 20 gig) is really not necessary. Also, due to the increased cluster size, a larger hard drive sometimes has more wasted (unusable) space.
By the way Joe, does your computer "crawl" on everything...or just certain apps?

With the help of Mark, I have been able to eliminate a lot of unwanted virus crap, but it still crawls along, but seems only when I first open my mail. Takes a while for the stuff to finally appear on screen.
I still got lots to go yet. I'm getting into the Inersanctum tomorrow. Got to be carefull.
I wanted the 40 gig for video transfers, but never got that project going yet, so now I'm in the process of cleaning house.

Try this....Start Run, type MSCONFIG..go to the start tab...uncheck everything...reboot...go to Nortons website, Download their WINDOWS System Utility Demo...run the applet that repairs windows registry entries. If this doesnt work...reformat the hard drive and start over...If you dont have at least a cable modem or DSL, its gonna take a long time to update it on windows update site...

SYSTEM TRAY it has to be on for your computer to operate.
My guess is that your RAM is being used up before you get to it. Go to
www.downloads.com and find a program called FreeRAM. It's a small program and you can use it to free up RAM space. I turn mine on, use it and turn it off. It seems to help.
Another thing, if you're using IE 5 or greater, using Windows Explorer go to: C:\WINDOWS\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 Delete all the sub folders in Content.IE5. These are temp files for surfing the net.
In there, too is a file that keeps track of where you have been on the net. When I tried to open the file with Notepad it created a document that was around 3,000 pages long.
Leave the Content.IE5 folder. It will replace the folders with new ones on restart. I have deleted them several times and it usually frees up a whole lot of space. After you delete them, remember to empty the recycle bin, too. On restart do a disk defrag.
If you're using Netscape: go to: C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\(YOUR USERNAME)\Mail If you use Netscape to retrieve your mail, the trash bin can be gigantic. It may have all the mail you've ever deleted. You can delete the trash file and it will create a new one. Empty the cache, too. I have an older version of Netscape to check new pages that I've made and the file was about 6MB.
Norton System Works is a good program, too.

Be careful deleting EVERYTHING in the Temp folder - many of the programs are now putting their install/uninstall information in \Temp.
Norton has historically had problems with detection and cleaning - it can also be turned off by some of the virii.
If you have high speed access (DSL/Cable) try
House Call from Trend Micro. It's a free service and is worth the effort if you are having virus issues.
