Jimmy. Does your floppy have information on it already. That is have you used it before. If so you don't want to format the floppy or else you will lose the information all together. If the floppy is new check to see if the write protect window in the lower left hand side is open or closed. Open is write protected. Good luck

HI HARRY,I have checked all of the things you have said ,yes there is data on the floppy i put in ,but it keeps on saying the disc needs to be formated, and when i try to format it window says it cant perform this tast,it is strange because the last time i used the floppy disc it was fine,do you think it could be a virus that has caused this problem ?as i picked one up from a email not long ago,but i thought that i had got rid of it with my norton virus scan.
God Bless and thanks for trying to help JIM.. |

See if you can read other floppies. If you can, this one is bad. If you can't, check to see if the access light comes on when you try to access it. If not, open the case and reseat the cables both at the drive and on the motherboard.
If none of that works, your drive has probably gone bad. I've had to replace a couple in my system over the last few years. |

Jimmy.....
After reading your post and a few of the answers, I think you have a defective floppy drive. Even if the floppy drive isn't bad,I'm sure you have had it for a few years. So replaceing it would not be a bad situation even if it don't fix your problem.
You can replace it for about $15.00.
I would try this before I decided that that the computer is messed up or there is a problem with the disk themselfs. |

Some floppies have different capacities such as 720 KB, 1.44MB etc. These may have different labels such as "Double Density". And some disk drives can read/write/format only one type of floppy disk, while others can read them all. |
