Is there a list of optimum string gauges that anyone can give me for a 22 1/2" scale Dickerson/Magnatone lap steel?
My basic tuning is A C E G A C (low to high).
I raise or lower most strings a half step from there either way sometimes.
I've seen bOb's pedal steel gauge chart, but was wondering about the shorter scale.
Thanks in advance. Rick

22.5 inches is very close to the 1st fret on a 24 inch neck. So your C6 could use the gauges that you would use for B6 on a 24 inch neck, such as:
C .017
A .020
G .026
E .030
C .036
A .042

I might use heavier than these on C and A strings, because these gauges I listed are for strings that get raised by pedals, which doesn't happen on yours.

You Da Man Earnest! That's pretty close to what I've come up with also. Which C & A would you go heavier on? (low or high?) I DO raise the low strings up a half step occationally. I like the feel of as heavy as possible string gauges on this particular axe, I just didnt want to overdo it. It's such a cute little thing that I dearly love making sound as big as I possibly can.
Thanks again...Cheers!

Rick,
I am pretty close to Ernie also on my ol' Dickerson and it sounds pretty good. It seems to stay intonated at the higher frets also, compared to the heavier strings. I got my info from the John Ely web site http://panworld.net/~johnely/learning/gauges.html
