When I log on here from my PC at work, I get an indication of "New posts since you last logged on" - Red folder icon by the message. When I log on from home I don't get this. Not very inmportant but...?
Thanks.

Tony, you're PC at home remembers things like where you've been on the Internet , they are called "Cookies" .These are set up in your Internet Browser settings. If you access the same website from another PC or laptop say from work, and you have never been on that site before, it's like you are starting all over again. Every now and again you should clean out all of your Internet files in the Temp and History directories as they do take up space and may contrinute to a slower PC.
Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, click on the Internet Options ICON and you will see the settings for both Temporary files and History. You should clear them both every now and again.
Good Luck

Tony Harris,
Your post can be taken 2 ways, which one do you mean?
1. My computer at work shows me all the topics that are new since that last time I was on the forum, my home computer has NEVER done this, why?
or
2. My computer at home doesn't remember what topics I read while at work?
Let me know and I can help you out.

Thanks Mark. I realise that my home computer can't know what I've read at work, so it's number 1.
At home the red little "new posts" icon is missing - all the folders are yellow.
Come to that, my computer at work isn't showing any new posts today either, and some of them must be new...
Never mind - I should be practising......

Tony,
OK if you are using Internet Explorer, try this:
In Internet Explorer, go to the TOOLS menu and scroll down to INTERNET OPTIONS and click it. Then go to the second tab which is SECURITY. Click on 'CUSTOM LEVEL'. Then I think it is the first option, and it should be a option to "ENABLE, DISABLE or PROMPT" for cookies. Make sure that you have cookies "ENABLED".
If you are using Netscape try this:
In Netscape, go to the EDIT menu and then scroll down to PREFERENCES and select it. Then highlight advanced and it should have the option also to"ENABLE, DISABLE or PROMPT" for cookies. Make sure you have cooies "ENABLED"
Let me know.
Happy Pickin'

Tony-- Or it may be that your Forum cookie has expired. b0b puts a 1 year limit on them. Go to your Forum 'Profile' and generate a new cookie by making some "change". (just type a space over a space in one of the fields - the "change" does not have to be 'different'.)
Or, click 'Preferences' near the top of the Forum page and delete your existing cookies. Then post something. (You'll have to enter your Forum name and password to setup the cookie again.) --Everett
[This message was edited by Everett Cox on 21 June 2002 at 10:57 AM.]

I recently changed from WIndows 98 to Windows XP and at the same time switched from Netscape to IE Explorer. Now, when I log onto the Steel Guitar Forum, I see all the yellow light bulbs indicating that there have been new posts since my last visit. However, after I click on a section such as "Buy & Sell" and then come back to the main menu, all the yellow light bulbs are gone and the folders are no longer red. This is very similar to Tony's problem. I have looked under TOOLS, INTERNET OPTIONS, SECURITY then CUSTOM LEVEL and there is nothing about cookies. Any help would be appreciated.

I've been having the exact same problem for a few weeks, and I haven't made any major changes to my computer at all. Hope someone can help with this!

When you go back to the main menu, don't do it using your "back" button. Do it by clicking the Steel Guitar Forum logo at the top of the page.
When you first enter the forum, the cookie gets set to the current time. If you use your back button to get back to the forum list, it will reload that URL and the cookie gets reset.
If you use the logo to go back instead, the URL includes the parameter bypassCookie=true. That keeps your last login time from being reset.

b0b, your way works but when doing it your way, how do you refresh the screen to show new posts without reloading the original URL?
The Back button doesn't reset the light bulbs for me, and after I've read all the new posts, I simply refresh the main screen which turns off the bulbs for messages I've read and lights up those that have any new messages since the last refresh.

Thanks for the solution, b0b. Now all I have to do is break the habit of using the back button.
