I am considering getting a Dell computer that comes with Windows XP. I have read that some people who upgrade to XP have to buy new printers because it won't support their printers. Dell is unable/unwilling to tell me if I will be able to use my Deskjet 722C with Windows XP. I was unable to get an answer from HP's website and when I called the number they gave me when I e-mailed them, I got a message that said I should go to their website - round & round, etc, etc.

Are any of you forumites able to use your 722C with XP?

For software, I have a lot of old programs that run well on Windows 95. Is it likely that I will now have to buy new software to run with XP?

Could I hear some of your experiences regarding software and peripherals after upgrading to XP?

Thanks,

Mel

Hi Mel
http://www.hp.com/cposupport/swindexes/dj722c_swen.html

XP drivers for your printer are available. The above is a link to HP's driver download site for the 722C.

Check the websites for the mfgrs. of your other peripherials to see if XP drivers are available. www.driverguide.com is a good place to check if you can't find maker's websites.

I don't know how compatible Win95 software would be with XP. Don't think it would hurt anything to try, though. Wiser heads may know better. I do run a couple old programs that were written for Win 3.1, but seem perfectly happy with Win98SE.

My own experience with XP and hardware is limited to a Mustek 600 III EP+ scanner. Mustek does not offer a driver specifically for XP; they recommend using the Win2000 driver after changing a registry entry. Apparently you fool the Mustek install software into thinking you have a Win2000 system when you do the install; you change the registry entry back after the install is done. Mustek claims this works, but I haven't tried it, and wouldn't without specific instructions from the maker. Manual registry editing scares me.

Hope this is of some help. Good luck,

Lou

Lou,

Thanks for the info and the link.

That answers my printer question. I would hate to give up the printer as it is still going fine.

I guess I'll just have to take my chances with the software and buy new where I must.

Mel,

I would sit down and make a list off all the things you would like to take with to your new PC. Maybe the printer, a ZIP drive or stuff like that. Then go to the manufacturers website and find out if they have the XP drivers. Or another site for drivers is http://www.drivershq.com/

Good Luck!

For what it is worth, I REALLY like WindowsXP.
