I am fairly new at lapsteel playing, but have been getting more and more into it, especially acoustic, these last few months.

I have, since I started, been playing with a biga$$ ernie ball bullet bar, that is way too heavy for my hands, because they simply does not sell steels or bars in northern Europe..

My question is; What kind of bar would you recommend a starting lapsteeler, stevens style, and do you know of any websites that sell them??

David, there`s good variety of steel` I would prefer a shubb pierce to a stevens, it is not heavy ,has round end ,also flat or sharp end to do pulloffs,has good finger grip` well styled. There`s a stainless steel made by Lebeda in one of those old countrys east of Germany. It is a lifetimer, quite dense , a little heavy ,but it delivers the tone Hows the Weather there ? Good luck

Ill be looking for a shubb/pearse bar, youre right on the dot, cause a lighter bar is what Im looking for..
The weather up here is surprisingly good, I think we are in for an indian summer, which is real nice..

There are a number of lap steel bars available on eBay auctions as well, but you're probably going to be happier dealing with an established dealer such as Folk of the Wood or Elderly Instruments.

I think really it matters HOW/What you play...if you do a lot of pulloffs and such like Bluegrass Music...I would say, the Shubb SP1 for the shovel like curve at the end or even a standard Stevens flat end...If you play a lot of Hawaiian, you really need a bullet end...but if you are fairly new I think you'd be able to use the Shubb sorta like a bullet end for What's JB call it?..Pi'tah?...weaving between strings...so if you like bullets you can order a smaller one,Like the Byrd size I think it's a Dunlop 918...I have tried to use a Shubb and a Stevens, but I learned w/ a Bullet bar and CAN'T use anything else...w/ the shovel style ends I tilt the bar when I weave in and out and I end up getting the end caught UNDER the strings...makes you look real stupid!!!...so, Bar experimentation is important...but once you find what works for YOU...you'll know it...so, When you do order, being it's hard to find bars in Denmark..I'd suggest getting at least 2 or 3...A small bullet(Dunlop 918 Byrd bar), a Shubb, and possibly a Stevens standard, at least then you can compare, and I think either Beard or Scotties' carry them all...check in the links section...Good Luck and Happy hunting!!!
