Printing a Black Background

Post by Chip Fossa »

Lately I tried to print a black page with
white text, and the paper almost immediately
passed right thru the printer with nothing
printed, except the URL address at the bottom of the page.
In the past, I remember this same printer
[HP Officejet 600] would print dark backgrounds with contrasting texts.

Does anyone have an idea here about this?
Are some webpages embedded with an anti-print code, so you can't print it?

BTW, here is the exact page in question. Ya'll might be interested in this page, as it explains where a lot of our "off-the-wall" phrases and idioms came from; like,
'it's raining cats and dogs'; 'don't throw the baby out with the bathwater'; 'threshold' to name a few.
Really interesting.

Chip;

if you're browsing with Microsoft IE, go to the the tools menu across the top:

then choose "internet options", then select the "Advanced" tab, scroll down to where it says "printing" and select the "print background colors and images" check box.

Hey fellas.....isn't there some way to
like turn that "black" webpage into a negative? You know.........just reverse evrything ......so that printing would be a little less expensive, and hassle, almost, free?

Use black paper and white fonts. Image

Actually, if you were to reverse the colors to get a negative the black background still has to be printed and would use an awful lot of black ink.

Chances are that when you tried to print white text on a black background you actually printed white text on a white background so that it looked like a blank page. Did your printer actually sound and act like it was printing?

Yes John...sounded this time like it was printing. And Greg, in IE 'options' the 'print background' was NOT checked off, so I checked it off, but it did not print.

However, it went thru the motions and sounded like it was a viable print, but came
out blank. So I'm still at square one.

Thanks fellas.

The easiest way is to highlight all the text you want to print by dragging your mouse cursor over it. Hit Ctrl-C to copy, then open NotePad, hit Ctrl-V to paste it into the document. Now you can save the file and/or print it in black text on a white background.

If you want to keep the font used on the web page, past into a word processor. It will be white on white, but you can select all again, select the color option and change the text to black. Image

Chip -- On the web page, either hilight the stuff you want with the mouse or use the EDIT/SELECT ALL feature. COPY the selection. Now, open WordPad and PASTE the data. Again, use the EDIT/SELECT ALL option to hilight the data. (It may appear as just one or more black areas with no visible text.)

Now, the important part. In the WordPad 'style' toolbar (to the right of the fontname and size boxes), you have an icon for 'Bold', 'Italic', 'Underline', and 'COLOR'. Left-click on the 'color' icon and choose the one you want. --Everett

Not trying to be an 'echo' or a smart alec.

WordPad can handle graphics and has font as well as color options. NotePad does not.

Some people don't have a word processor or may not be adept at using one. Nearly all of us have WordPad installed and can, therefor, make sense of specific instructions.

Thanks Jim and Ev,
I have Notepad, MSWord97 and MSWorks. I'll
try your methods.
I did highlite the webpage and tried printing, but another blank page came out;
so I guess you have to paste it as you guys mentioned.
BTW, when I went out to the same website, to
try these things, it re-invented itself, and appeared as a 'regular' webpage with brownish lettering on a beige background.

Anyway, thanks again fellas.

I just copied and pasted it into Notepad. It worked just fine. Note: Don't copy the whole page, just the text inside the black table field. Image I imagine you couls also highlight the text and right click and select print. When the print properties come up, select: print selection.
