The whole problem could be a connection problem.
Before you try anything drastic: Shut off the computer and unplug it. Then take out all the memory chips. (Mark the one that does work with a small piece of masking tape or something so you'll kow which one it is.) Then use a can of compressed air to blow it out. Then replace the memory chips, making sure they are seated firmly onto the mother board. Connections can get dirty from just setting there. It's a good idea to blow out the whole thing from time to time. Good luck!

You probably have one memory card that is bad. Many of the relatively older computers required memory in pairs, as yours does.

I'd check around with some of the local independent computer shops for memory, especially the ones that sell used PC's. They probably have some of the older memory around they'll sell relatively cheap.

New memory is "cheap" at this time and if you can't find some used memory, check places like Best Buy for new memory.

Mike -- About a month ago I did some repair on a friend's computer which included a memory upgrade. His was a 'brand X' machine requiring memory similar to your's.

Checking on eBay resulted in a purchase of 64MB @ $25 + $5 shipping. Chips arrived quickly, in good shape and were 100% OK. There were several comparable listings.
