What you did on the communications end should not have interfered with the audio. Go back and check the "Volume Control" panel again and make sure the sliders are turned up. There is one for wav, another for CD, etc, in addition to the master volume slider.
You can access the Volume Control Panel by clicking on the speaker icon in the sys tray at the bottom right of the screen. If you don't have an access icon on the screen, you can access it through the Accesories/Entertainment (or Multimedia depending on the version of Windows you have).
One thing that concerns me is the addition of the CD burner. You need to check and make sure there isn't any system conflicts. Open the System Properties panel and then device manager and make sure all is well. To access the System Properties panel, RIGHT click on My Computer and the LEFT click on Properties. |

One thing I forgot to mention. Check the cabling to the speakers. If you disconnected the speakers make sure it is plugged back into the speaker jack, not the line out. And better yet try the speakers from the good system with the bad PC and see what happens. |
