One caution on that site. I've used that site for updates, but the way they check your PC for version numbers does not always produce correct results. e.g. the current scan from them for updates shows I do not have the latest Direct X V8 (it shows V6) but in fact I have V8. It shows I need quite a few of the MS Office 2000 updates when I have all the updates (I tried reinstalling one of the office updates and the system told me it was already installed). Their list shows I need an update to the Windows Media Player where again I have the latest update.

Some of the updates they show, especially from Microsoft, are actually beta versions - not the final version that will be released to the public. At one time they had listed an update to Internet Explorer, that turned out to be an eary beta version, and the public update release was two months after ZD Net Updates had it listed.

I've exchanged e-mails with them about the updates and like most, they don't want to admit they have any problems. However, I did find that most of their information is obtained from the registry and apparently some program updates do not change anything in the registry. Also programs that do not "register" (have an entry in the registry) will not even be detected.

The Update site is OK as long as you know what s/w versions (and updates) you have and are aware that some of the updates they list are beta (not the final version).
