Has anyone ever heard of, or seen, a 12 string acoustic lap steel (like a 12 string guitar, you know, string pairs)?

I think it would yield some interesting results....

Yes,
I played a "Tut Taylor" 12string Resonator on my album on TARA records "Sounds of Sunset".
clips are " Under the Double Eagle + San Antonio Rose ", somewhere among the 115 found at :- http://www.waikiki-islanders.com/html/basil_bio.html

Recordings of acoustic 12-string lap playing date back at least to Leadbelly. The most remarkable use of the instrument for Hawaiian-style playing I know is by Kelly Joe Phelps, who as I remember plays a Yamaha in an unusual D7 tuning. The only album on which he plays 12-string is "Roll Away the Stone," which includes an utterly stunning version of the hymn "Doxology." Worth a listen.
