I did a gig a while back which I was supposed to play steel guitar but the lead player didn't show up so I was asked to play lead. I had a Tele with me but didn't have my usual amp for guitar. All I had was an old Randall Steelman 500 with a 15" JBL that I was going to use for steel. To my surprise the dang thing sounded better than my usual MusicMan HD-212 One Fifty that I'd been using for guitar. The Randall has a built in EQ on the front panel and 3 knobs for Reverb. The usual intensity and then a High EQ and a Low EQ knob for the reverb. Also it has a remote reverb knob like the old Session 500 but it only has the intensity control. I've used it on 4 more guitar gigs since then and I'm going to start using the thing regularly from now on my guitar only gigs. These were high dollar amps when they came out so that's probably why you don't see too many of 'em. If any of you have one and also play lead guitar, you might try it out for guitar, they're great. I had used it before with a line run to it from a Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue as a sort of mini PA set but had never plugged straight into it but that's changed now........JH in Va.

Jerry,

about how much does it weigh (or in comparison to , say, a silverface twin reverb)?

Dan, it's about the same weight and size of a Nashville 400, I actually use the cover for a NV 400 on the Randall. Also, I noticed that at Scotty's convention there's a great Canadian guitarist named Steve Pitico who uses a NV 400 with his Telecaster. Maybe some are finding out that steel amps actually sound better on guitar than some guitar amps. I've used my NV 112 on guitar before and while it sounded good, the highs weren't quite as bright as I wanted but the Randall fills the bill............JH in Va.
