I have been asked to play The Star Spangled Banner at our next jam ala Jimi Hendrix. I play through a NV112 and distortion provided by Profex II. Trouble is, it don't sound very good, my little 15 watt Crate practice amp sounds better. What conbination do you guys/gals use for R&R overdrive/distortion? What amp, FX unit/pedal ect. Thanks for any help. |

I have the Marshall "Guv'nor" and the Boss "Blues Driver". Both good for great smooth sounding distortion. IMHO
Both are good but I like the "Guv'nor"
better. Heavey metal case and cheaper than the "Blues Driver also...our local music store sell them for a round $75. |

A Matchbox (so you can get a better impedance match with a guitar stompbox), a Distortion Plus or Ratt...even a Tube Screamer or one of its many clones, or my real favorite for Marshall tones out of a Fender, a Lovetone Brown Source - and a Fender Vibroverb, Super Reverb, Bassman, or Pro Reverb dimed. Or, just the Matchbox and a dimed Marshall (roll the tone control off a bunch).
Never heard a solid-state setup that could get close to that type of sound...and especially not with a rack effects unit, where distortion is usually the weakest link.
You need to crank a tube amp, and then hit it in the preamp HARD with an OD or distortion pedal. But if the amp isn't already singing with violin-like sustain to some degree, you can't get there from here..... |

I use a Tubeworks Tube driver with good results. I go out of the guitar to the Tube driver, then to the volume pedal. I use it to play string like pads on the low strings and also for R&R type leads with single or double strings. I like the tone control flexibility of this unit.

FWIW, I just gave it a try using a PODxt on the 'Purple Haze' setting, and it sounds about right. It's modelling a '68 Marshall with a Tychobrahe Octavia pedal and vintage plate reverb.
Borrow a PODxt and plug it into your NV112 and you're all set... ;-)

Which Model crate do you have? Is it a GT, GX, GFX, GTX, GLX or what. Mr Malmstien use to use a crate for added distortion to his Marshalls. Have you tried this?? |

If you don't mind spending some money I imagine one of these would work. It even has the Star Spangled Banner preset (Univibe+SuperLead+FuzzFace). PODxt will get you very close as Lynn points out. If you want the cut-price funsize Hendrix experience get a Danelectro 'French Toast' octave fuzz. |

Jerry,
My little Crate is a GX-15, which I really like. And I also have a GTX212, 120 watt with 2 Eminence Red Coat 12" that I put in it, that sounds great, but is way to heavy to lug around. And for my steel, the NV112. |
