What is the best bang for the buck in a stomp box delay?
Thanks,

Old time Boss DD-3. Simple, tough, and effective, Nuff said.

Rack mounts are covering up more than
sounding nice.If a little bounce is needed, the DD-3 is about all a good player needs. A chorus just throws you out of tune.I remember Jeff saying at a seminar. What ever you do .Don't use a chorus.Half of what your playing will be out of tune.

Thats just bad advice and not true. Alot of Randy Travis steel work had chorus on it. Alot of stuff on the radio in the last ten years had chorus on it also including Kenny Chesney hits. I use it all the time and have been recorded using it. Tuning has nothing to do with it. You can either play in tune or you can't. Both Jay Dee Maness and Sonny Garrish recorded many hits using a chorus on their steel. For all Jeff did for the steel guitar community, he did have his own ideas about some things and nothing was going to convice him otherwise.
As far as a Digital Delay, I used a Boss DD-5 for many years (until I went to the POD XT). I was going to buy a DD-3 but the store I was in didn't have one but they offered to sell me the DD-5 for the same price. Later I ran across another steeler that had a DD-3 and I did a comparison and was glad I got the DD-5. |

I have a Lexicon MPX 200 effects unit in my rack system and use it for a tad of delay, chorus and compression. I am more than satisfied. |

I use a Boss DD-3, and I think it sounds great. You can get them used here on the forum for under $100. It has a better delay than the one in the Boss RV-3 reverb/delay pedal, IMO. The DD-3 seems to be the standard stomp box delay for steel players. I think it's because this pedal responds favourably to the jolt of a hot steel pickup. |

I've been using one of these Micro Delay units for years and love it. It's very small and takes up very little room in the pac-a-seat.

Why Hasn't anyone mentioned the Boss DD-2. It is better sounding than the DD-3. Try them side by side and you will see.. |

Kyle Lehning(Randy Travis'Producer) and Doyle Grisham both told me that the chorus effect was achieved by double tracking the steel part. Also most of Sonnys chorus sound was achieved by doubling.

Find a used Ibanez EM-5 Echomachine. It's from the plastic-body "soundtank" series. They are getting a bit pricey, but worth it - very warm sounding - it's a digital delay with the closest sound to REALLY expensive analog delays I've ever found. I have a tape Echoplex, an H&K Replex (great unit) - but I use the Ibanez the most. It just has something in the sound missing from all the usual stompboxes.
And I need to jump in with Kevin - a well-tweaked chorus can make things sound huge. The only time they're out of tune is due to operator error.[This message was edited by Jim Sliff on 11 August 2006 at 11:20 PM.] |

I used a DM-3 (analog) for years, I think it has a sweeter sound then the DD-3, but the DD-3 seems to have a brighter kick. Just my own thoughts on it.
