Question from the new guy. I've heard a bit about Profex II, but haven't really found any info on-line. Can anyone tell me a little about it? Thanks.

Michael,
IM"H"O,the ProFex II was one of the best processors made for steel. It has more steel programs than you'll ever use in your lifetime.(128,+ another 128 for standard guitar,& still another 128,if you have a programmable card to plug into it,for a grand total of 384.) It takes the place of a "dozen" (+/-) stomp boxes.
Unfortunately, they are no longer available as new units, since they have been discontinued. They sold, new, for $700,msrp.
You might be able to find a used one for $200-$275,depending on condition.(& how much of a "wheeler/dealer" that you are.) I own 2 of the units, one "stock",which I use in the studio,& one "modified",which I use in a concert situation. I don't think you'd be disappointed if you tried one. BTW,these units are totally programmable,to suit your own preferences.
On the "downside",the input gain control is on the front of the unit, while the output gain control is on the back, making it difficult to reach in a rack case situation.(a "feature" I'll never understand.)
Also,the unit is powered by a 16 v. a.c. "wall wart",which is kinda hard to find.(another "f.i.n.u.")
However, the "pluses" kinda make up for the "minuses".

The Profex II has taught me one thing for sure. No amount of effects will make my steel playing ability sound any better.
Darn practice anyway...I wanna do it NOW.
It is a neat unit though. And the Newman video on it explained a lot too, about how to use those banks. Now, if only I could rack mount the pedal board.[This message was edited by Ray Minich on 20 April 2006 at 11:21 AM.] |

Ray,
You're absolutely right! The "Newman video" beat that instruction manual all to hell! I learned more,in 42 mins, than I did reading that damned manual all night!

That was quite a program Peavey and Jeff Newman had going. If you bought a Profex II w/card, you sent the card to Jeff and he would send back a programmed card along with his video. |
