After going through 2 BWs in my Peavey LTD, I'm thinking of trying another speaker. Eminence makes a 4 ohm, 80 oz. magnet 15 that I have in mind. Has anyone else tried this particular speaker in an LTD?

I buy wholesale and have never been able to get a 4 ohm from Eminence! They say they are only for the foreign market. Is this a new addition to the line?

Do you have a model number or a link? I am curious!

For my money, find an old Spider Web model (flat magnet). They sure sound fine!

Some folks like a JBL, but the originals were know to blow, hence the development of the Black Widow line.

Peavey hired John Gilliam, from EV, to design the originals. I know, I was a dealer then and met him at the factory.

They were testing the BW speakers in the field with the likes of Terry Bethel. They said Terry was blowing a JBL about every week for a year! I saw that LTD400 of Terry's, he showed it to me at the St Louis Show many years ago!

I have blown many a JBL K130, but have never blown either a D130-4 or M31-4 JBL. even in my FET-500's, just my experience.

John, why did the speaker fail? There's got to be a reason for the failure.

Wish I knew, Mike. I've had this amp since the early 80's, the first speaker "went away" within a year or two, never knew why. I replaced it with another BW soon after. The amp sat unused for about 15 years while I was on hiatus from the music business. After using it for a while again recently, just noticed the amp sounded terrible again. My amp technician here in Detroit confirmed that the amp was fine but the speaker was toast. So I'm a bit reluctant to put a third BW in there without at least considering other alternatives. BTW, the Eminence speaker I'm talking about is a 4 ohm job very similar to the one in my FSK.

Ken, I have a 4 ohm Eminence 15 (not for sale) that came in a '90s Vibrasonic Custom. It has better lows, but I prefer the highs of a JBL or Black Widow.

Here's a thought. After sitting in the same position for many years, the cone sags with gravity and the voice coil may not sit concentric in the gap. If it scraps on the bottom, the speaker eventually fries. I have turned my old speakers 180 degrees in hopes of avoiding that - seems to have worked. Also, to be safe with my JBLs, I use two of them with any amp over 80 watts. Fender could use JBLs in 100 and 135 watt Twins because they used two of them. I sometimes use a JBL D130 (not an F) and M31 together with a 180 watt Super Twin head, and so far they are holding up okay. Of course the way a volume pedal is used with steel helps protect the speakers (my volume pedal is usually no more than 1/3 of the way on as I attack notes - so in effect I'm only attacking the notes with about 60 watts, even if the Super Twin is on 10).

FWIW, Eminence will be introducing a new speaker to the Patriot line, the Commonwealth 12. It uses a 4" voice coil and a BIG magnet. I believe the speaker weighs 21 lbs., about the same as a 12" BW. The speaker is said to have characteristics similar to the JBL D and E series speakers, but with a much higher power-handling capacity. The Commonwealth 12 is supposed to be on the market in a couple of weeks. That's all I know about it. I was told this by an engineer at Eminence, who replied to an email I sent asking which Emi would get me closest to that unique JBL tone.

Right now Eminence makes a 12" speaker that is rated at 150 watts RMS which is called the Tonker ....It 's got a wide dynamic range and works well in Twins, so it should work out OK in your Peavey .... I'm going to get 2 of them ...I am working on a cabinet with 1 - 15 and 1- 12 inch each cabinet and have 2 cabinets in stereo !!... I'm thinking maybe using EV's for the 15's as they have a nice bottom end , and the Tonkers for the mids and high's ....Should be a good match ..I'll keep you posted......Jim
