Topic: Need Auto Wah recommendations (envelope filter) |

My Digitech 2112 has a great sounding Auto Wah, but I need a stomp box so I can kick it in and out while keeping my hands on my steel. I bought a DOD unit and it doesn't sound very good and it doesn't have a depth control. What do you guys recommend?

The very best is the Mutron III+. Save money and try the Q-tron.

| Wow, I didn't know Musitronic was still in business. I really miss my Mutron II phaser. That has to be the best phaser ever. I wonder why they don't make it anymore? |

Why not just use a MIDI controller on your 2112? If you don't already have one, you can probably buy one for about the same as an envelope follower and you can do hands free patch changes.

I could never dig the auto wah, and a veteran of some dozen or so envelope filters (on the bass, mind you) I ended up with three favorites.
I agree with Brad, the Q-Tron is cool.
I'm also a big fan of the old yellow Boss Dynamic Filter. Not made anymore but not impossible to find.
The top in my book is the Big Briar (Bob Moog) MoogerFooger. Killer all-analog sound and each of the four parameters can be controlled from the knob or a CV foot pedal.
Again, these are all envelope filters so they might not be right up your alley.

| I'm an effects collector from way back- 28+ years- and the best I have ever heard was the Seamoon Funk Machine. The Mutrons are cool, but ridiculously overpriced as the effects market is more insane than guitars. The best newer one is either the Electro Harmonix Qtron or the more recent Funk Machine reissue; The reissue is cool since you can do a mod to it that is really simple, a couple of resistors and a cap, to make it friendlier for non-bass strings. |

The Lovetone Meatball is the best I ever used. I have been using the Adrenaline II these days for some of those sounds.

| The Q-Tron Plus is pretty cool. It has a loop circuit, you can plug an external trigger signal into the return of the loop to trigger the envelop with an external source.....if you like to experiment with effects and routing signals this can be pretty interesting. They sound good, too. |

| I'm looking too, and I'll look at these recommendations. DON'T bother with the Boss AW-2, the noise and hiss make it unusable for public display, I think. |

I don't use any sort of auto wah (I bit the bullet a year or so ago and now use a real wah). But the very best auto wah I found is the Addrenalinn pedal. It has a bunch of other stuff in it (some useless amp models, some very good delays and flangers, and some amazing time based filter effects), but the auto wah is a thing of beauty. Even better than the MuTron III, which I love.
If you are going to use a MuTron, be sure and get one of those Black Boxes, because they are tone sucks.

If anyone is into DIY stompboxes. General Guitar Gadgets has info on a Mutron III clone, called the Neutron. And also a Dr Q clone called Dr Quack and another called Nurse Quacky. I've built the Dr Quack and it works very well. www.generalguitargadgets.com
Click on "effects"/"filters"/and select Neutron or Dr Quack/Nurse Quacky.
