Bob and I seem to travel the same paths WAY too often (grin).
I started in 1963 in Surf Music, and am a reverb freak. I've tried almost everything you can think of.
IMO the Holy Grail is the best reverb unit ever. I prefer it to the outboard spring unit (it's quieter) and tonewise it's identical. Other than amps with built-in reverb, it's the way to go. One of my setups is a Fender 400->fuzz->Holy Grail->Maestro Phase Shifter->Replex delay->SWR Baby Blue bass amp. Tone for days...
Ooops - this was supposed to be part of the reverb thread. Short circuit between seat and keyboard...

Jim,
I also found out about the Holy Grail. Play one now thru a Peavey Vegas 400. Just awesome.
Never cared much for Peavey's reverb, even when I bought the amp - figured I could just drop in a Fender [Twin] reverb pan, but that was never to be [incompatible].
The Grail is simple. One master presence control, and 3 reverb settings. I've gone thru the gamut of "boxes' and effects, and have pretty much decided I like the sound of the steel as it is, with a touch of reverb, of course.
And you just can't beat the price. I think I bought it for around $78. |

Hey Jim, are you just using the SWR head as a power amp with the Fender400 as the preamp? Are you playing steel through this rig, or some other guitar? I'd thought about plugging the steel into my SWR SM-400 head just to try out the tube preamp sound.

How do people feel about reverb versus delay for pedal steel? I haven't tried delay much, but some people seem to use it in place of or along with reverb. |

Two questions, two answers...reverse order:
I use both reverb and delay. They are significantly different effects.
As far as the SWR's, one is a Baby Blue with 2 - 8" and one 5" drivers...runs about 160 watts. Plug steel or guitar into it and it's a great sound.
My other is an older PWB-200, one of Steve Rabe's first amps. It's a 200W head, and I run it into a 2x12 cabinet loaded with Celestion bass/keyboard speakers. Great bass sound with a PBass and works really well as a steel amp! That one is not as good for regular guitar for some reason - probably the speakers. |

Went down to the local music store to try out the Holier Grail. It was DOA. Doesn't say much for EH's quality control.
