So far, I haven't seen but a few for sale on the Forum. The main reason was the weight. I don't remember reading any complaints about the tone. I haven't seen any for sale on Ebay.

I guess Fender finally came through for us steelers.

I sure love mine. And yes, it weighs a little, but its about the same as my Nash 400 which is a great amp as well and I'll be keeping it as well. But the Steelking just sounds closer to the sound I hear in my head and thats what matters to me when all is said and done!

They sure are great sounding. If Fender could make it 15 LBS less it would be perfect. I loaned mine to my super picker friend Bob McDonald for the weekend. He used it Friday night for a live show and liked it so much that he purchased one Saturday afternoon. His only complaint was the weight.

I spent the weekend with my old buddy Bill Mayville in Vegas.

He has a music room full of goodies, including a Mullen, an Emmons Lashly III, a Steel King, a few Peavey Steel amps(1000 and 2000) and a Fender "The Twin".

I played both steels thru them and the Steel King sounded best of all amps, at low levels, hands down.

I'm a fussy lil' sucker for tube warmth with a Tele but the sound of the Steel King and the Tele was awesome! I would not hesitate to play out with it. (Kudos to you and Fender Sam, for the design of the Steel King!)

Not too many comments here. Does that mean everybody's happy with their Steel King amps?

There has been several threads on this. Do a search on FSK. I've had one since May and for me it is the best combo amp on the market. IMHO if you try one you will like it.

Clyde - I am aware of the old threads. Most of those were started when the amp was first introduced. I'm wondering if everyone is still happy with their amps.

Well, I broke down and bought myself one. What a great amp! The owner's manual says, "Your Steel King amplifier is designed to sound great with the tone controls in the center or 12 o'clock position". That's where I started. It sounded good, but not what I was looking for. I ended up with the BASS moved to 1 o'clock and the MID LEVEL at 9 o'clock and there was that sound. It pretty much matches the tone of my beloved 20 year old Evans FET-500. The spring reverb sounds very nice. I haven't tried any digital f/x yet, but so far I love it. I'm wondering if the volume pedal can be placed in the f/x loop, and do away with a matchbox, like the 3 cord hookup on a Peavey amp.

I just tried inserting the volume pedal in the f/x loop. While it did control the volume nicely, the overall level dropped considerably. I had to turn the amp all the way up to get a decent level, so forget the 3 cord hookup for the volume pedal. I did insert my f/x rack in the loop and it works very nicely. The Lex reverbs sound wonderful with this amp.

This is gonna be a keeper, for sure.

Well, I used the amp on the bandstand for the first time tonight. The settings I used at home did not work well, at higher volumes and with other instruments in the mix. Here is what I ended up with:

EQ TILT: 10 o'clock
TREBLE: 10 o'clock
MID LEVEL: 10 o'clock
MID FREQ: 11 o'clock
BASS: 1 o'clock

My Mullen is a pretty bright sounding guitar, so I had to back off on the treble a bit. I was extremely happy at the way the amp cut through the mix of drums, two guitars, and a bass guitar. I got lots of compliments from the other pickers.

I love this amp!

Lee,
Those settings are very close to what I use, except I have the bass set at about
11:00 to keep that vintage tone on my Sho~Buds. Glad you like it!

One thing that I am really pleased about is the fact that this amp sounds so "warm", much like my old Evans FET-500, perhaps even more so. One of our guitar players actually thought I was playing through a tube amp.

It's time to give my 20-year-old Evans a rest.

Did I mention that I really do like this amp?

Lee I knew you would like it. It is the only amp that I have had that you can have booming lows and not lose the silky highs. Congrats.

I've had mine for a little over a month, and like some others have posted, the speaker is getting broken in and it sounds better all the time. Plus I have an old Les Paul Recording guitar with low impedance pick ups, it sounds great thru the amp without doing much tweaking when I switch from my Zum. I also love the thing.

I have two of them and use them on the road and in the studio. I really like the amps. I did however go ahead and change the speaker out because i did not have time to "let the speaker break in". In my opinion, the speaker that came with it was really bright and almost harsh on the high end. In fact, our front of house engineer with Lonestar did not like me using this amp at first because of this. I put a 15 inch 4 ohm black widow in and it immediately made a huge difference. Now it is my favorite amp I own, and I own quite a few, and the front of house engineer is very pleased with its tone. I know several other players who have done the same thing.

I also really like the patch points that they included on the amp. I use a matchbro on one song, but I hate the tone of my steel when it is ran through the matchbro. With this being said, I velcroed my matchbro into the back of the amp and ran it through the effects loop. Then by using the foot switch I can turn the matchbro on and off by simply pushing a button to turn the effects loop on or off. This way, when I am not using the matchbro it is completely out of my signal path. The tuner out and muting is another great patch point. I have a peterson tuner, and I love it. However, like the matchbro, it kills my tone when I run it in my signal path. by using the tuner out it is completely out of the signal path.
This is a well thought out amp.
