Best tuner I have used in 35+ years. Real simple to use, especially if you use the Newman tuning charts since they are pre-programed into the tuner meaning no more charts to carry around or try to memorize. You can even program your own temperments into it(which I don't do). good investment in equipment.

There are two tuners by Peterson that have steel temperments.
I find the V-SAM better suited to my oddball tunings. Tuneup or touchup, it is quick and easy.

BTW...
The VII is identical to the SAM except for the following:
It does not include a metronome.
It does not have a built in speaker.

Other than these two things, it is the same tuner and is completely programable.

Actually there are a couple other slight differences which have no significant bearing on steel tuning. Here is the FAQ answer from the Peterson website. The VSAM does not have a thru output which to me is a ding.

What are the differences between the VS-II and the V-SAM?
Selectable temperament roots
VS-II=No V-SAM=Yes (12)

Concert A range
VS-II=433-447Hz V-SAM=410-490Hz

Given the tone change that occurs when using the thru output on the VSII the lack of it is not a factor.

Best hookup would utilize one of the 2 outputs on a LDR or one of the effects loop sends (preferably the post loop) on the PV Nashville series amps. These hookup buffer the signal so you do not get a tonal shift.

As an alternative you could use a Peterson strobostomp in TRUE BYPASS mode if you simply must have a thru output.

I've not received my tuner yet so I've not had a chance to try it. The website for Peterson specifically claims that the VSII has a true bypass mode.

No Robert but you can program it to whatever you want, it has 2 tempered tuning setting's p1 & p2,just ck. the owner's manual...

Not a dumb question at all...

Actually, according to the Peterson website, the VS2 comes preprogrammed with E9 and C6 tempered tunings PLUS two user defined tempered tunings. From reading on their site, these are the Newman tunings. I'm looking forward to mine arriving just to check it out. My son is always stealing my TU12 for his guitar and my Zen On tuner has gotten a bit erratic with age. Of course, I could always just go back to a tuning fork!

As the newest model in a totally new generation of tuners, Peterson introduces the "VS-II Virtual Strobe Tuner", a compact, battery-powered tuner with unprecedented bang-for-the-buck features. The VSII definitely changes the tone if you leave it inline and use the thru output. I understand the claim but the "real world" testing we've done indicates otherwise.

Again if you use one of the 2 methods for hooking it up I described, no problemo, Dude.

Definitely, strongly recommend one of the 3 Petersons as it is the last tuner you'll ever need.

I didn't realize y'all were Peterson dealers until after I responded. Of course, I now feel like an idiot (Nothing new there!) My tuner is being delivered today. I'm looking forward to visiting with the Carter folks at the TSGA and maybe picking a spell. See you there!

The way I read the web page info, the VS-II does not have the thru that will not change the tone. It does have a thru, I have not tried it. The Strobo Stomp has the true thru, but there is a setting in the battery compartment you have to set.
If you ever have a problem there is no service any better then Petersons. I use the E9 presets on my universal, but find I have to tune the beats out of the B's.

I got mine and I am really impressed. It does slightly color the sound as John pointed out. No problemo, I just don't keep it in the signal path. I am guessing that this is the last tuner I will ever need. It is really cool for doing setups on regular guitars too!
