This Fender amp. lists for $2,999 and can be bought (musician's friend) for $2,099.
But, is it worth it?
Would it ever become a collector's item? I think that's the only way I would ever invest in it.

well in my view.
NO
not for 2 grand
There are several of these floatin' around with 15" JBL's in them, not the spec'd Eminance..for 2 grand that should not even be an option..

That's a lot of cash for an amp that's probably not built as well as an old one. I'd recommend finding a circa-'69 Fender Twin for around $650 and have a baffle made for a 15" D130. Re-cap the amp, and have it set up like a '65 or so. It's very simple. You could have the dream Fender/JBL combo for under $1000 and it'll probably sound better and be more rugged than that new amp. Plus it will hold collectible value better as well. Just keep the old 2-12" baffle in storage. They just dont hand wire circuits like they used to and they also dont make transformers like they used to. Old Fender amps are real gems. You can pry my '69 Twin w/D130 from my cold dead hands.

There is no investor/collector value in a brand new modern product of any kind. Investor value accrues to items that are usually at least several decades old. HOWEVER, if it sounds substantially better than anything you've ever heard, then I would think it would be worth the money.

That amp can be DIY built for $1200. And that's on the high side, using exact equivalent parts, or parts that exceed the quality of the amp in question. (Mercury Magnetics trannies, a REAL D130, baltic birch baffle,)
I'd have a hard time buying one for that much money, but to be honest, I spent almost that much when I bought my VibroKing.
I built my own VibroClone, so I'm familiar with the parts and costs. Ken Fox has built lots of them.
But if the amp really "speaks" to you, that's a different story.
Same thing for guitars with me.
GAS can be a terrible thing.

I have a customer who buys a lot of the "Boutique"amps on the market(hog farming MUST be a GOOD business!!!). He bought one of these about 6 months ago. He brought it in for me to see. I think it's THE BEST sounding Fender amp that's been made in the last 20 years! It's the only new amp that I have heard that has captured that classic "Black-Face" Fender tone. Construction-wise it's a "Custom Shop" amp, hand wired to a hand wired circuit board, JUST LIKE A "REAL" FENDER SHOULD BE!!! If you look at the price of this amp compared to a Carr or a Top Hat,etc. it's right in line. [This message was edited by Jerry Hedge on 14 January 2005 at 05:40 PM.] |

Isn't is interesting that six-stringers are moving towards 15 inch speakers again while so many steel players are recently touting 12 inch speakers??? |

Rick, is this for pedal steel or regular 6-string? It's a little underpowered for steel, especially with the early breakup that is designed in these for the black-face sound 6-stringers love. I'm with Brad -- a silver-face Twin or Super Twin will give you more clean headroom for steel, cost much less, and already has known vintage value. Put the chassis in a head cab like Lloyd Green (and me), put the stock cab away for resale, and get your favorite 15" speaker(s) in a separate cab. For this added convenience, you'll still have spent less.
If you want to stay in the same volume range, get a BF or SF Pro Reverb, and put your favorite 15" speaker in it, or give it the head cabinet treatment.
If you are a 6-stringer and want that black-face crunch and early breakup, then maybe this amp is worth it. There are lots of Pros and Twins on Ebay all the time, but the black-faces are right up there in the price range of this new amp - and you would have to add the cost of replacing the speaker, and refurbishing the caps and tubes. If this is really made just like them, and gets the sound, maybe the additional features and all new parts are worth it. |
