My dear friend, Terry Bethel stopped by the other day. I'm at the Riverside in Laughlin NV thru Saturday. He brought a steel guitar black box with him for me to try on the job. I had fooled with one at home, and was really impressed, but we all know the real test is on the gig. I was every bit as knocked-out with this unit. It took away the "raspiness" or "harshness," or whatever describes that annoying edged to highs. I actually enjoyed playing more those 2 nights I used it, because I wasn't constantly fighting that uncontrollable edge. I've missed the tone I got back in the early to mid 70's. I used a Fender Twin amp in the 60's, then switched to an Evans Hybrid 300 in the early 70's. When Evans went to complete solid state amps, I started using those, and I Still do use an Evans pre-amp in my rack. I gave the unit back to Terry last night after our show. I'm getting ready to go down to the showroom to do the show tonight, only without the black box. I know I'm going miss it immensely. Guys, I'm not one to jump on every new gadget that comes along, but in my opinion, this thing is a real winner. I used it before my Hilton pedal, and I was really pleased with my tone. You owe it to yourselves to check this unit out.

Bob, I just put my 16 year old NV400 in the shop for maintenance, and the amp tech said he doesn't do the Peavey mod which is okay. I've never had the opportunity to hear one with the mod so I may be missing out...but, with your comments, I may consider getting the black box and see if I can get that old tube sound. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Carl
