i have seem some using a little black box clamped on the leg of their steel is this some kinda sustain thing? and if so for a beginer is it just money thrown away?

Calvin, the gizmo you have is probably a "Steel Driver". It's meant to be used as a preamp, and also can be used as a distortion device if it's turned up. If you're using a powered volume pedal, then you don't need the preamp benefits, but you can still use it for distortion (a "fuzz" sound). Whether it's needed or not is entirely up to you. Some players like them, and others just prefer a clean sound of the guitar going right into the amp. If you're using a "pot pedal", you may like the added gain and different tone it gives you, but my own feeling is that beginners need to concentrate more on just learning to play, rather than getting too involved just trying to get different sounds.

I usually strap a chunk of C4 to the leg of my steel. I wrap it in black electrical tape, so that might be where the confusion was. It is to used only in dire emergencies, like when the band leader calls for Johnny B. Good one more time.
