I'm using a DeArmond Pedal with an Allen-Bradley Type J pot, which has started making some noise. Is this curable or not, and should this pot be no longer available, what can take its place?

Thanks in advance.

James,
Try spraying some contact cleaner into the pot. You can get some at Radio Shack.

The Allen Bradley is probably a sealed pot. If it is, you can remove the back by bending the ears of the cover. Spray the circular carbon strip with contact cleaner, rotate the pot several times, replace the cover, crimp the ears back with a pair of pliers and it should work for a long time. Don't worry about anything flying out when you remove the cover. It is merely a dust cover. Good Luck..........JD

Thanks, Gents. The whole job took some 20 minutes, and things are now as smooth as silk!

I have a Goodrich volume pedal L10k and I have taken the back off of my pot and cleaned it but I still get a scratchy noise from it, this pedal has an op-amp number MC33171P marked on it do these go bad after a while and what do I replace them with? I even replaced the battery inside it. steveb.

Clarostat 500 K available from Geo. L's is the best replacement I found when I ran out of Allen-Bradleys.

As far as the 10K pedal. I had one and had the very same problem as you describe. If replacing the 10K pot won't cure the problem, I think Goodrich will rebuild it for you if you send it back to them. Or you can convert it to the 500K type by removing the electronics and battery and wire it just like a Goodrich 120. After a couple of rebuilds on 2 different electronically enhanced Goodrich pedals (The L6 and L10), I finally just converted to 500K passive pedals. Now I wouldn't use anything else.

Steve, I sent my pedal back to goodrich. and it is like new now. The battery hookup wore out and I think he put a new pot in it.
His phone is 231-893-5702.
Good luck, Earl

This is beginning to remind me of the fixed vs. retractable gear discussions in the old airport clubhouse!
