Mike,

I know this may seem like a silly question but if I don't ask I'll never know or learn.

I have two Session 400s. Both are Black Widow Equipped, Limited. One I set the main volume on 3 and have plenty of volume. The second one I have to set to 5 to match the volume of the first amp. Any ideas as to why two seemingly identical amps have such a difference in volume output??

When you turn the gain knobs to minimum (ccw),are they pointed at zero? One of the knobs may have been pulled off and replaced wrong. Also, I assume that the pre-gain on both amps is set to the same level.

I checked all the nobs on both amps and they are all on properly. I also made sure the lows, mids, highs, reverbs, etc, were all set the same on both amps. I know that my first amp has had a mod kit installed but I don't know about the second amp. Would that make a difference? (I'm still learning about all this electronic stuff so please bear with me.)

Even not knowing much about the mod, definitely the difference between one amp having it and the other not would result in differences in tonal characteristics (otherwise, why do a mod?) and certainly could also create differences in perceived volume. Also, components have variations in accuracy (+ or - 2%, 5%, 10%, whatever) that could result in variation from one device to another, and over time these values can drift even more. Setting a pot to a printed number on a faceplate is far from a precise calibration.

I agree with the comments by Jon Light. After the mod kit was installed, then it is not a comparison of "apples vs. apples". But, I wouldn't have thought that it would be that wide of a margin. Make sure that the knob indicators are identical as it is a "pull off" type of knob.
