I want to tell this short story and express
my thanks to "Forumite" Gerald Ross.
App a year ago,,I had been looking for a triple neck custom guitar,,such as the one's
I had all those years.
Be it known that any Fender product that was
presented to "endorsers" was still considered
the "sole" property of Fender".
Early on,,it was just a handshake between Fender and the "endorser". But due to a few
uncomfortable circumstances,,,Fender put this
policy into writing.
Any "endorser" chosen by Fender would agree that the said instrument was property of Fender.
This a was agreeable to most everyone. The endorser had an advantage in this agreement
policy,,his or her instrument could be changed for a newer model at any time,,providing the current model used by the "endorser" was returned to Fender.
I felt this was fair practice,as Leo Fender &
Don Randall bent over backwards for their Fender family of endorsers. This came about after a few unscrupulous people took advantage of Leo & Don.No names mentioned here,,,but a fairly well know endorser had a real problem.
He would report his "gratis instrument" as being stolen,,Fender then would send him another of his choice.
The another incident occured with the same individual and once again,,a new instrument was sent to the endorser.
It was called to my attention,,,,,that an instrument had a problem with the neck being
warped. Since it didnt matter whether or not the instrument was owned by the original owner or not,,,Fender stood behind the name & reputation it has earned over the years.
After close examination of the defective neck
I asked the owner,,where and who he purchased
this from. Only for my records.
It was then revealed that this instrument was
sold to this individual. There were no police
reports made,,,Fender did not question anyone
if someone says,,well my instrument was stolen,,,so be it, and an replacement was on the way from the factory no questions asked.
But since this occured twice,,I looked into it and found that the endorser had found a
nice little "niche" here....he would get an instrument,,play it for awhile,,,then sell it and put the money in his pocket.
Nice work if you dont have a conscience.
I was able to contact the indivdual who was guilty and speak with him,,,we were not out to take any legal action etc,,,just an explanation.
When I approached him,,,he denied having anything to do with this and insisted he was the target of bad luck.
Upon further discussion and my convincing him that no "legal" repercussions were our agenda,,,,he broke down and admitted to me that he in fact falseified the thefts and sold the instruments (2) over a period of (1)
year.
I asked him "WHY"??? as he was a popular entertainer and working steady,,WHY?? he replied,,well,,,I figured if they (Fender) gave it to me,,I could do what I wished with it. I wanted to give Fender more exposure.
Maybe he had a point,,,you receive something and I guess it rightfully belongs to you. WRONG.
When I explained that this was not the case, his only defense was,,,"I didnt know that",,after discussing this with Leo and Don
we decided it best for this endorser go and find another company to promote their product.
I tried to be very careful and diplomatic in explaing Fenders decision regarding this matter. He flew off the handle and was not at all complimentary to me .
Leo and Don agreed to let this person go his own way. Fender was not a large and profitable company at that time,,,,but regardless,,,it was a bad situation and since
we regarded all endorsers as "family" we never had a problem such as this,,,Oh maybe a few others here and there,,,,but we were then a little more careful in who we felt would do Fender and themselves the most good
so far as "endorsers" etc.
With all the instruments I have had over the years,,,whenever a newer model was introduced
I would have the privledge of having it.
My guitar that I was using had two choices...
(1) to be returned to Fender....(2) to be sold to a Fender dealer at a reduced price.
At times a dealer refused to accept a used instrument,,especially a steel guitar" a Strat yes,,,,but a steel guitar NO.. I was then asked to send it back,,maybe Leo wanted
to give it to charity as I know he donated many instruments to his church over the years.
I have had (3) Fender custom guitars in my lifetime,,,the very first was one that I bought from an independant rep back in 1948 here in NY,,I was unaware that this rep was no longer a Fender rep when I bought this guitar and he was trying to sell off his samples. This is the first Fender "anything" I ever had. This changed my life,,It was the guitar that brought Leo & Don Randall and myself together.
I then had another triple custom sent to me as the first one was pretty well finish checked and Leo & Don wanted me to have the "latest and greatest",,,,they then sent another. The first one was returned to Fender. The second one was one I used for a few years,,,but the three tripod legs really bugged me,,,,since I was a rep as well as a endorser..I felt I had the right to express
my opions regarding the tripod leg design.
SEE "MY MIDDLE LEG" in the archives here on the Forum. I was able to convince Leo (once in my life) that I wanted a guitar with 4 legs,,,if you wish,,,,look at the "archives" and you will find the story.
I now had a beauty of a guitar a custom with (4 legs) "now I had a leg to stand on".
The custom guitar that I used prior to that was returned to Fender by hand...I returned it personally. I asked leo to install the 4th
leg on my present tripod leg custom,,,but he said NO..there would be a "flange" in the center and you would have (5) legs,,,and he smiled he was a funny guy.
I then recieved my very last custom ever,,the one I turned in was now in Leo's possesion..what would he do with it?? It was beauty,,not a mark on it,,,would he give it to charity?? or to his church?? well I didnt give it any thought after my (4 leg) guitar was mine.
When the 1000 was introduced Randall called me and said,,Jody,we are sending you a new 1000 guitar and we would appreciate if you you have this on the cover of your LP recording.."HCOA"
I agreed although I didnt use the 1000 on the HCOA LP,,,,I used the custom.
As I became more familiar and comfortable with the 1000,,,,it was time to say good bye to an old friend,,,my custom guitar with the (4) legs,,,,(the only one I know of).
I then sold it to a friend by the name of Dick Brandt,,,,a nice fellow,,,I sent the check to Fender for the amount I received...not very much back then,,,how about $100.00 dollars compelete with case and (4) legs..."WHY DID I DO THIS"??????????
Dick was a big guy,,,,standing about 6ft 5 and weighing in at about 265 lbs,,,,he was so happy with his new guitar, and called me and told me how much he liked it and how he improved it,,,,
I said "improved it"??? what did you do??????
he said "hell I made it lighter: and easier to carry around. I said "yeah" HOW?? he said well I "routed" out the entire underside of the guitar and it weighs about 15 lbs less now,,,,he was really excited...I almost had a "heart attack".
The end is coming,,,For years after I always wanted a custom guitar again,,,,,hell I had access to so many over the years,,,,,but now?
where are they??
I then joined the Forum and I saw a few custom guitar in the For Sale column. The nice part was,,,,I met a few nice people with e mails back and forth regarding the possible sale of the custom...
I saw a post that a fellow by the name of Gene Jones had an original custom guitar that
he had thoughts about possibly selling..I e mailed Gene, and after a few replies,,Gene decided to keep his Fender guitar,,,and Iam happy he did. He would have been sorry if he sold it,,,I did however find a friend in Gene Jones and Im proud to call him just that
"a FRIEND".
I then saw that a gent by the name of Charles
Tilly had a custom,,I e mailed Mr.Tilley,,,he too was a little uncertain as to whether or not he wanted to sell his custom guitar,,,another friendship happened
although we rarely e mail each other.
Mr. Tilleys guitar btw is now owned by Doug
Beaumier,,,he beat me to it. I would ask anyone who had a custom guitar for the serial
number,,,I had this fantasy,,,,its coming soon. I then saw a another custom nbeing offered by another nice fellow by the name of Bruce Wandmayer...he too became an e mail
friend,,,but no custom for me this time either.
What the hell did I need a custom for after all these years anyway???? who needs it???
In a few of my posts back when I first joined the FORUM,,I casually mentioned that I was looking for a custom triple Fender.
From out of the blue,,,I saw a post by a fellow by the name of Gerald Ross. He mentioned that "Elderly" Instruments had a "mint custom" for sale,,,,,but added,,,Its
VERY EXPENSIVE...I was curious,,,I called Elderly and spoke to a fellow who identified himself as "FROG",,,I told him I was interested in the custom they had advertised
FOR SALE,,,,I asked him all the questions I could,,I didnt tell him of my Fender backround,,,I asked him for the serial number
??? he was very proffesional and obliging..he gave me the "serial number"
BINGO,,,,,,, I told him to ship it to me NOW.
I wanted to check the condition etc etc,,,It arrived here at my home app 8 months ago.and
it is in FACT,,,,the second custom I owned many,,many years ago..How did they get it?? where did it come from?? How many hands have played and touched it before it came home to me??? Sort of mixed emotions like that "old" Eddy Arnold song..."I Really Dont Want To Know"
I owe this reunion of my long lost love to Gerald Ross,,,who gave me the permission only last week to post this...it was Gerald who led me to this "jewel" and memories of my past. And to the wonderful people at Elderly who were so gracious and helpful in dealing with me...I thank them as well,,,in particular to a sweet gal by the name of
Dawn Nash. Last but not least to "FROG" who was the one who put this together for me.
I have had a similar expierence before..I found my long lost Fender (4) neck guitar back in 1987....thats another story and can be seen in Guitar Player Magazine dated Feb
1988 in an article written by Richard Smith.
It seems as though the spirit of "Leo" is with me forever,,,,but dammed that third tripod leg,,,I guess he won the argument back years ago,,,he always insisted on me having a custom with (3) legs,,,,I asked him why???? he replied,,,,Noel Boggs likes it and so will you...This guitar is MINT and sound GREAT,,,I had a Bigsby out there somewhere,,,,but I know I will NEVER get that back,,,ya know why??? I think Leo will see to that,,,Old Fenders Never Die,,,they wind up with Old Fender Guys PS my friend George "Keoki" Lake has found my long lost friend Dick Brandt,,if any of you feel your Fender custom guitar is too heavy......
post it here,,I will have Dick Brandt contact you and he will re-route your direction,,,need to lose 15Lbs ??? I will have Dick contact you....slim fast on a steel guitar.
THE END PS My custom guitar was expensive yes
But I owed much to that guitar. It was pay
back time...

Mr. Jody Carver,
Thanks for that story.
Four (4) legs on the triple Custom certainly gave it more stability; but I achieved more stability on my Fender Dual Professional by replacing the three leg sockets with three double-neck Stringmaster sockets. The legs spread out more (about five inches) and aesthetically it even looks better.
The three legs on the triple Custom did not create a base large enough for that size guitar.
Johnny Sibert had someone to convert his 26" neck-scale, triple Stringmaster, to three legs and had different sockets to make a larger base.
There is some advantage to having three legs, the instrument will always set level without having to occasionally adjust that fourth leg.

Rick,,,
Yeah??? try telling that to Leo This is a story for entertainment only.

MY MIDDLE LEG,,,thanks for your reply,,I find
it interesting,,,but thats now,,what I refer to was 55 years ago... |

Jody, Thanks for the great story. Do you think it was Don Randall that came up with the agreement, or more of a group effort between Don, Leo, and Forrest? Having endorsers back then was a new game. Now it's much different. Being able to pay a high visibilty endorser now costs a buck or 2. When I was building guitars, Steve had a policy, no free guitars. "Special Artist Price" (read cost) but no freebee's. Not even for some local cat in NYC with a steady Monday night gig! So if you see a guitarist with a Stephen's, like Kenny Burrell or Vince Gill, they paid for it.
>Maybe he had a point,,,you receive something and I guess it rightfully belongs to you.<
That's a hard lesson to learn! But the guy has a legit point.
It's nice to hear stories like yours. I remember reading that article in guitar player about your Quad. Sometimes it's not about the money. You can alway get more of that. It's been said "What goes around Comes around". Ain't that the truth. It's like this world we live in, some other guy owns it we just live in it!
So will this return be heralded with a second Hot Club of America album? You used a Tweed Twin back then right? Didn't you say you wanted to write a book?
I'll keep my ears open about your beloved Bigsby triple 8. Maybe that can be your next chapter.
Oh Yeah, ",,,Old Fenders Never Die,,," they just need filter caps, and tuners and pots and resistors and speaker recones and new handles, and refrets and pick-up rewinds! But thanks to that wacky guy in Fullerton that was born in a barn and raised in the orange groves, who's favorite song was Faded Love, we get to be "Old Fender Guys"
I've never met a Fender I didn't like![This message was edited by Mike Black on 03 February 2002 at 09:02 AM.] [This message was edited by Mike Black on 03 February 2002 at 09:07 AM.] [This message was edited by Mike Black on 03 February 2002 at 09:09 AM.] |

You've seen pics of my Dual Pro, Jody. Let's just say that it had a 'near death experience'.
It's my plan to lovingly restore it in memory of the departed forum member who encouraged me to buy it ***bless him, curse him***. If/when I find the time.
Great story, again, Jody.

You are a "gem" your analogy is amazing,,you
did hit the nail on the head. Endorser policies can be sticky, There is a line a manufacturer has to draw regarding..who is the person or person"s worthy of earning the
right to endorse a product?.
Its like baseball,,,years back a ballplayer would be happy to sign a baseball for a kid,
today those "millionaire" players stoop so low as to ask a kid for $50.00 to sign his baseball. I think thats horrible,.
Its all about money. Sure Fender had a few endorsers,,,they were hand picked for the most part,,,some times picking was not so good and they picked a bad apple.
As you know your history and have done your homework re' western swing music and western swing musicians,,,you your self are aware of people who take advantage.
The simple answer is,,,where do you draw the line?? who do you give an endorser privledge
to? who do you say NO to??.
Cooley and Wills were both very close to Leo Fender & Don Randall,,,Spade and Bob chose Fender because they loved the product and also had a "one on one" with Leo & Don.
Without a doubt in my mind,,it was those mentioned that were the pioneers of the Fender success story.
The Fender Custom became know as "the guitar with the "Shiny Diamonds On The Front" making reference to the chrome plates that cover the "hex nuts".
Noel Boggs was the first as well as Leon and
Les Anderson to make the Fender steel guitars
popular.
I think that someone with your knowledge should post more often on this Forum,,,I wonder how many people are aware that you are
a well read individual and have much knowledge and common sense regarding the past
history of the greats such as Paul A Bigsby,
Leo Fender,,I do know that Chas Smith has on more than one occasion given you much credit
for your "lively" interest in what is known as Western Swing history and keeping it alive
and well.
No,,,it didnt start in Nashville,,Its a Western thing and started out your way.
Like my our Buddy sang "I Did It My Way" Appreciate your comments,,,and thanks for letting others aware of you knowledge,,,
you have it all together,,,keep it that way.
Post when you can,,,you have a lot to offer,
but dont post longer stories than I do,,I have to be the "King Of Long Stories".....thanks for your compliments, I need them I dont get them too often,,,but coming from you?? well thats something special..

I see what you refer to,,However I have seen
unsucessfull face lifts that look much worse
than that. A little makeup here,,a little
filler there,,and "SHAZAM" that Dual Pro will
look as pretty as it should.
Abused and used..down,,,,BUT NOT OUT.....
Make it right,,and it will make you a great guitar,,it just needs some
"" FENDER LOVING CARE""...you have that to offer....DO IT. Mike Black who posted above
has brought many guitars back from the dead.
Thanks for posting this guitar,,,,,dont give up the ship. Like Nike says,,,"JUST DO IT"
I didnt forget your tapes my friend..its a long story,,,like most all of my stories.
BE WELL..... |

Jody, back in the early years when I still played my Custom, I played standing and I leaned on it while standing on one foot using the other foot for the volume pedal, and as a result had to reset that middle leg two or three times....it has more wood filler around the base than it has wood!
I never had any problems after I started sitting down, but I sure would have appreciated having the extra leg. |

Thats exactly what I told Leo. He insisted that the tripod design is best. I said Leo,,did you ever see a three legged animal,?
He replied NO....I then said have you ever seen a 4 legged animal?? He replied Yes.
He said I have seen a two legged "jack ass"..
I said yeah,,,where? he said standin right
here talkin to me. He had those magnifying
glasses on like Dr.Cyclops,,and gave me a big grin.
You couldnt get ahead of him...he had answer
for everything.
I had the nerve to say..Leo are you ever wrong??? he said Yep....only when I talk to you.
He would refer to the back of a guitar neck as the "Cheeks"...his usual thing with me was
Hey pardner,,,"how be ya?? Hows your "Middle
Leg"?? I would say,,its getting weaker and weaker,,,I then said....how's your "Cheeks"
Leo?? he replied,,,,well their really ROSIE.
I said I'll bet youre cheeks are blushing because of my Middle Leg. He would then call
Forrest White over and say....Forrest..,,,,,,
these New York fella's are sure nosey,,,I said OH yeah,,,well no more nosey than your
rosie "cheeks".
Hey ,,,Im giving away my book here...gotta go
and check on my "cheeks" and "middle leg"...
Thanks for your reply,,I thought for awhile
I was doing a "single here". Thanks for "bailing me out" |

I long ago gave up standing with my triple Custom...I was 6'2" back then...(am now just under 6'). The guitar was always too wobbly when I played it standing. I only play it in the sitting position. But since day 1, I always wondered why it had only 3 legs, speaking of which, I saw a 3 legged dog the other day and he wobbled also! |

I have tried to add this to the opening page
but since the thread I posted was so long,,I was unable to tell another quick story about
my triple neck custom.
As I look at the replies here,,I see some of
my favorite people that I have had the good fortune of meeting here on the Forum.
Jon,,,Mike,,,,Gene,,,,Paul,,,,and last but not least,,my friend George Keoki Lake.
A day dont go by that I dont recieve an e mail from George,,not one... He has a great sense of humor and has proven to me to be a
good friend,,Im sure there are many others on
the Forum who feel as I do about George.
His e mails are humorous as well as heart warming, expressing his inner feelings,,,,,,
for myself as well as my wife. He has truly
been a friend to me.
What I tried to add to the post above,,,was the following,..I mentioned a fellow by the name of Dick Brandt. Dick is the big fellow who "routed" my 4 legged triple neck guitar
in his hope of making the guitar weigh less.
I have NOT seen or heard from Dick since that
day back in 1960 when he called to tell me how happy he was to have taken 15Lbs off of the Fender custom.
I have lost contact with Dick since that day.
To prove what a small world this is,,,Keoki e mailed me and mentioned an old familiar name,,"Dick Brandt"..my ears perked up,,my eyes "bugged" out WHAT??? HOW???,,,Keoki is
from Edmonton,AB, Canada,,,how could this be?
Are there two Dick Brandts?? I gave Keoki my home telephone # and address,,,Dick has NO computer,,I guess they weigh too much .
One nite shortly after this,,,my phone rang,,
I picked up the phone,,,and a loud very excited voice rang out,,JODY?? JODY?? JODY??
before I could speak the caller said,,,Hey JODY (thats me) this is your old buddy Dick Brandt,,& I got your phone # from Keoki,,,,,
I was suprised as hell,,,WHAT??.
I said Dick ,,,how are you guy,,etc etc and
after a little while he said,,I see by your area code,,,you live in Pennsylvania now. Both dick and myself used to live on Long Island years ago.
He said,,,its unbelievable,,Iam only 30 minutes from your house,,I live in Pennsylvania too.
Dick calls me regularly,,I have not as yet seen him,,,he has a winter home in Florida,,
but he is an avid steel guitar fan and owns a
few really nice guitars.
I asked him about my old 4 legged custom and
he was sorry he sold it years back,,he sold
it to a service man stationed at an Army base
on Long Island. The phone call lasted 3 hours
and although you may not beleive me,,,Dick did most of the talking,,he was like an excited kid.
It was George "keoki Lake that brought us together after some 45 years or so. So you see as George is my proof,,,funny things have happened to me in the course of my life.
This has been a long and to some and very boring thread,,,,but to those who put up with me and my long stories as these friends
on this thread,,,,I certainly appreciate each and every one of you and I value your friendship and well wishes for the days to come for my wife and myself.
My steel guitar has been my life and through
my steel guitar..I have met people like you
that make me all the more feel that God has been good to me. I thank each of you for your
comments,,,,and George,,,you are very much correct regarding playing a three legged Fender standing up. Too bad those of you like Gene and George etc were not there to back me up when I asked Leo Fender if he ever
saw a three legged animal,?? well Keoki just
gave you his description of the "three legged
dog" that wobbled..besides which leg does the
three legged dog "lift when he see' a "fire
hydrant"??,,,Gee he wouldn't have a leg to
stand on,, Hey Leo....are ya listening?
If you are,,,well "GOD BLESS YOU LEO" even though I thought your idea was wrong,,and LEO
had you listened to me....you may have become
succesfull and famous,
Thanks to each and all of you.
PS Dick Brandt still weighs 265 and stands 6ft 5 inches tall,,,,,George,,,Im shrinking too,,,calcium will help,,,,they say,,,,BE well to all of you.Dont forget...your Middle
Leg,,,Leo put it there for a reason...
Edited to "shorten my "MIDDLE LEG" it started
to wobble again. You see as you get older
your body gets shorter,,,my "MIDDLE LEG" stayed the same,,so I shortened it,,,,,,,,,,,

To Whom It may Concern
In view of the whole world. I rceieved a pkg
today from Paul,,it was a big bag of fresh
pecans that Paul sent to me. I ran to the PO
and saw this box from Macon Georgia and a
note inside saying.......Jody....NUTS TO YOU.
The other said, from one nut to another..I didnt wait until I got home,,,I opened the box and started eating those shelled fresh pecans courtesy of Paul..
I ate about 50 pecans and I think I have grown a couple of inches,,,"around the waist"
Now Paul,,,,what do you have for getting my height back.??? do you have lifts for my shoes??,,but to get serious not delerious ,I do appreciate the pecans, and Marilyn has started a nice fruit cake with your pecans and she spikes it with bourbon and then wraps the fruit cake in cheese cloth and lets
it sit,,,and then re-soaks the cheese cake again and again..with BOURBON
After a few pieces of that cake,,,I dont care how short or tall Iam.....give me another piece of cake.
We have named this....The Paul Fruitcake..I know it sounds weird,,, but thats what we call it,,,need the recipe??? I will send it..
You have the NUTS,,,I have the Bourbon....
lets get together,,,this could be the start of something BIG....whoever dont like this post,,,,Its NUTS TO YOU crunch crunch..
Thanks again Paul,,,your'e a fine guy.....send more nuts,,,,Im running out..
Thanks friend. |

This thread is wearing "thin" , It started with a "Custom Fender Guitar" and wound up in
