I know this has been discussed in the past but I'm curious to get an update. What kind of power amp are you using in your steel rig and what do you see as the pros and cons of the different power amps out there? [This message was edited by Chris Bauer on 16 October 2004 at 03:16 PM.] |

I use a Nashville 1000 (usually at home) or an Evans for gigs 'cause it is smaller (see signature below) and both sound really good to me. I used to have a Nashville 400 but I didn't love it's sound as much.

I have used a Peavey DPC750 for about 9 years in my rack rig and it's great. Reasonably light weight, ooodles of power, and it sounds fabulous.

Bob Hoffnar turned me onto the magic of the VHT 2/90/2, four KT 88s in a two rack space box. Tons of headroom, glassy highs, huge lows, and extremely reliable.
A buddy of mine just took delivery of a Boogie 2:90:2 Simul/Class amp, which is six (!) 6L6s also in a two space rack, it also sounds incredible.
I am a valve amp guy, so for my money, the either the VHT or the Boogie would be the way to go.
Feel free to email me if you have any questions about these amplifiers.

In my rack setups, I have been very satisfied with Tube Works amps. Their MosValve series give you a very nice, full, warm sound. Herby Wallace uses their stuff.

STEWART is definitely worth trying. They are priced right, light weight and sound good. |

Mosvalve 500 by Tubeworks. Magical tone without the tubes (the older models)!

The ultimate:
VHT 2/90/2 More bottom end than JLO
Close but no cigar:
Mossvalve 500
Good if you want light:
Stewart World 1.2
I've owned all of these amps. The only one I still own is the VHT (well, technically it now belongs to my bass playin son, but he's off at college now).

In my full rack system (for steel shows, etc.) I use a Soundtech PS 802 Stereo Power Amp. It's great.....single rack space digital....weighs about 10 or 11 lbs. and runs cool without a great deal of noise coming from the two cooling fans on the bottom.......HAL

With Erv on this one....can't beat the clean warm sound of the Mosvalve 1500 power amp and the Tubeworks 9002 preamp for a rack system. |

Is anybody using a Peavey Classic 50/50; at least on your smaller gigs or practice sessions? |
