I would like to know the right way to set up all my pedals. I have a hilton pedal-tube screamer-DD-3-7 A sustain unit-then I run it to the tuner and from the tuner to the steel plays and sounds good but I think this might not be the correct way. I come from the amp to the tube screamer out then from the in to the out of the DD-3 then from in to the out of the volume pedal then to the in of the 7A then from the 7A to the tuner and from the tuner to the steel if anyone would tell me the right way it would help works ok this way but I dont think it is the right way.

If I were gonna, here's how I would do it:
tracing the signal from the guitar to the amp (not the reverse as you do in your example):
guitar --->tube screamer --->Hilton vol ped ---> DD ---> amp
I am doubtful you need an additional "sustain unit" along with the Hilton pedal.
actually I'd probably do this:
guitar --->vol pedal --->amp  |

The tube screamer it can go after the pedal and then you can fade into greater distortion if you want.
This can be very useful. Low volume cleaner sound and for those punched lines the Screamer gives more growl.
This also allows the Hilton to see the guitar unimpeded so it will give a better non distorted tone.
Just an alternative. |

| To echo what David D said, I've noticed better tone when going first into the Hilton, then into any other pedals. Using the Hilton to manipulate the TubeScreamer is also good advice. |

| I used to do it this way too--the same way that 6 string guitarists like to use their volume knob to clean up the sound. But I tend to use my pedal (Sparkle Drive--a fancified tube screamer) for slide guitar type playing and I find that the more consistent sound of the device before the volume pedal suits me better, even if it is less versatile. |

Jon, the best way to do that would be to have Brad's SGBB in the steel and then the screamer.
Then you get a good coupling of pick up to a preamp stage like the Hilton does, and then mess with the sound as you see fit.
I have used different distortion boxes both before and after the pedal for the reasson you stated. Two totally different sounds. One consistent, one variable. Each has it's place. |
