Why won't my WINAMP work?

There are many opportunities to listen samples of steel playing on various posts of this site. When the format is Windows Media Player or Real One Player, I have no problem. But if the format is Winamp, I get the Winamp box with the playlist and all the buttons etc, but when I push play, nothing happens. No sound. Am I supposed to pay Winamp something to make their software work? I've gone to their web site and found it very confusing.
Thanks,

I've never known WinAmp to be exclusive to any particular file type; I've essentially used it to play .wav and .mp3 files ... all easily accessibly via Windows Media Player as well. If you're WinAmp is failing, you may simply choose to save the song file to your desktop --- then open it with Windows Media Player.

On a side note, and to my knowledte, WinAmp's always been free. WinAmp may not be working if other player types are currently open.

Gary, the easiest thing to try would be to do an "uninstall", and then re-install the app. When I first loaded the new (free) version of the RealPlayer, all I could view was car commercials! I uninstalled it, and then re-installed it, and it worked fine (except that the downloads take longer than they used to). Sometimes, there's a conflict with an older version of "free" software, and it can be resolved by simply installing a second time.

Most "free versions" of software now install programs (spyware) which are activated every time you initialize or use the app so they have a record of what you've downloaded or viewed since the last session. This "electronic eavesdropping" (and the occasional advertisements), is the price we pay for using "free" versions.
