Topic: Fender Twin 65 re-issue Help? |

My 65 Fender Re-issue is breaking up on higher volums.It has Jenson speakers,I'm not sure what to look for . Could it be the speakers, tubes or something else? I do want to change out the speakers and hot rod this amp any suggestions on speakers,tubes etc. Thanks Frank

What do you mean by "higher volume"?
Remember, they're rated at around 85 watts
RMS, so if you really push 'em they will
overdrive somewhat. Especially with the
C6 neck.

| Jay Thanks for responding, When I run my vol. to 5 it distorts I hooked up my two black widow 15's (walker cabs to the back of the twin to see if it was the Jensons but still breaking up. |

Are both channel breaking up the same? if only one channel, then the problem resides in the preamp circuitry for that channel. If both channels have the problem, then the problems starts at the inverter tube (last 12AT7) before the power tubes or in the power amp section. To check the inverter tube, swap it with tube #3 (reverb drive tube, another 12AT7). If only one channel is bad, sub tubes 1 and 2. If channel two is bad, tube 4 could be involved, swap it with tube 1 after the above test.
Tube functions are as follows:
V1 channel 1 preamp stages (2 stages)
V2 channel 2 preamp stages
V3 reverb tank drive
V4 reverb recovery and channel 2 final preamp mix stage
V5 tremolo oscillator
V6 inverter (actually a long tail pair)
V7-V10 power tubes

| Are your Black Widow's 4 ohm speakers? They usually are.Anyway, If you're hooking both speakers up in the back then the amp is gonna see a 2 ohm load. It would relly like to see a 4 ohm load. Try it with just one BW. The speaker ought to handle it OK. That Twin is getting pretty loud if you're crankin' it to 5! |

When your amp is begining to distort with the volume at 5, what are the tone controls set at? A common way to get into tube drive without too much volume is to turn the tone controls down and the volume up. Try setting your tone controls at 8 to 10 and volume at 4 to see if this helps.

| You're not using an amplified (powered) volume pedal, are you? If you are, and the gain's set too high, that will cause distortion too. |

The first gain stage is prior to tone and volume controls. It can be overdriven with the volume on 1, if the signal from the guitar is hot enough.
It takes a pretty large signal to distort a Blackface or Silverface amp. The amps also have alot of loss thru the tone control circuits.
I often run a Profex 2 directly into a Blackface or Silverface amp. I turn it up just enough to warm up the front end stage a bit (not distorted, just pushed a bit). The amps sound pretty good that way. I can see why a steel guitar always sounded so good in these amps, as their output is much hotter than a guitar.
Back when these amps were popular, the single coil pickup was more dominant. It has less output than todays humbucking pickups! Just another thought to consider and a good reason to use jack #2 in the associated channel (padded down about (6db).
