After reading the "best mike" string in the searched posts I'm thinking of getting a pair of PVis over the standard SM57s or 8s.

Are they OK to "hang over" the amps in the "standard fashion", or is it mandatory to put them on stands?

Is there a better live Steel mike overall for the price?

Thanks.

Eric,
It is not a good practice to hang a cardioid mic over the top of the amp as the area of the mic(the rear portion) that is picking up the signal from your amp is the least sensitive.

Placing the mic on a mic stand and pointing it toward the speaker will allow the mic to reproduce the signal better.

Try speaking into the side of a cardioid mic and you will get a sense of how the low frequencies are lost.

Thanks Mike.

Since this is stunningly to ME my first shot at Mic ownership in all my years, I am going to get a couple PV1s and get a couple of those clamp on holders. Maybe the diamond series if they work out well.

Next up will be double amping ith my Nvl400 and a 112, which is gonna be the next step, and I can leave my Session 500 I got in 79 at home once in a while.

Thanks.

I used to carry one of those clamp on goosenecks like they use to mic drums in my pack a seat. I just screwed the clamp onto the edge of my amp and bent the gooseneck where I wanted my SM 57 mic to be placed. The one I had is called "The Claw." and I think was manufactured by Latin Percussion. Guitar Center should have them. They are pretty inexpensive.
