I would like to record myself playing along with tracks and not hear myself in the mix while recording. I want to hear myself from the guitar amp only and hear the tracks through the system.
I have the following equipment in my rack.
12 track mixer
CD Player
CD Recorder
Reference Amplifier
Speakers
For the guitar, I use a Nashville 1000 amp and it has direct capability to go to the board.
Can I get playback of the tape, record me and the track to the CD recorder without hearing me in the mix with what I have, or do I need another mixer?
If so, how do I configure? If not, what is the best way to go?
Thanks. |

It depends on the type of mixer you have..you would need submixes for this task.
You would send the stereo tracks to a master mix and a submix , The Master would feed the recorder and the submix would feed the ref. amp. You would send your Steel to the master mix to the recorder but not the submix to the ref. amp...or something like this. There's more than one way to skin this cat but your mixer needs to have the flexibility.
Several low cost mixers have 2 or 4 submix outs for these types of tasks. Generally they are also used for live sound to control what goes into who's monitors as well.
Now the poor mans way ( me for years) of doing it is to split the CD player feed before the mixer, sending it to both the mixer and the ref amp.
The Steel would only go to the mixer. The master mixer out would go to the recorder. So you would get everything into the recorder but only the tracks at the ref. amp.
good luck..have fun

Assuming your mixer has a main and monitor send, and it's a stereo mixer...
plug your guitar and CD player into 12 track mixer,
Plug 12 track mixer main stereo output to the CD Recorder stereo input, pan the CD channels hard L and R. Pan the steel center.
send a monitor mix to your
Reference Amplifier minus your steel,
send the main mix of CD L&R + steel to the 2 track input on your recorder.
tip : monitor your steel in the main mix to start with so you know you have a blend you like before you commit the tune to a CD.
To do that : use a couple of inputs on your mixer for the CD recorder playback so you can monitor that if the playback outs are avail. in record mode - likely they will be.
Else, just burn a few coasters until you get it the way you like it

Chris and Tony....
Hey, thanks guys! I have a good Alexis mixer so I will check the monitor and main to see if this will work for me. I also have one or two small mixers around here that I can use to pre mix. With some work on my part and the help of your advice, I think I can get there.
I'm still learning how the electronics work. I have an 18 channel Roland that I have yet to record on.
A step at a time.
Thanks again....

Thanks again...
Your comments got me motivated and I got it done this morning. Works great! I just used a little 4 track Berringer that I had around and it worked like a charm.
