If I was looking for a tube power amp to go along with my Mesa Boogie Studio Pre amp, what might be my options? I play loud, in a big room with a 5 piece band that comes to pick.

Hey Larry, I don't play gigs but I use an old Crown D150A w/ a SOHO QTR-1. We turned it up one night and couldn't hear for 10 minutes after. If that still isn't enough power, they also have a 300W model. The D150 is a stereo amp but will go to mono for about 400W. You can usally find them on Ebay pretty cheap. My Crown has been used to the extreeem and nothing seems to hold it down. Perfect if you have a stereo preamp. Very dependable piece of equipment and won't cost you your first born.

I use a Mesa Fifty/Fifty. It sounds great and I've never found a gig it couldn't handle.

Larry...
I have a VHT 2/90/2. It is a stunningly good tube amp. It is heavy and expensive however.
I have used a mesa boogie studio pre with it with excellent results. I'm waiting on new tubes for the studio pre, so I've just been using a profex II or my Evans HVSP with equally good results.

I would have to go with Steve and reccomend a VHT 2/90/2... Probably the most tonefull if not one of the most tonefull power amps for either pedal steel or electric guitar !!...
It's worth carrying the weight for the tone, and the power you get !!..

I'm using EVM-12's, but they might not be what you'd like. In my view, speakers are a very important part of the total instument. The tone of your speakers and speaker cabinets should reflect the kind of tone you want for the gig. EVM-12's work real well for the new age and rock music I play on my Sierra, but they sound wrong when I use them for country with my Williams.

Dennis at this point that's a good question.
I'm using a 412 Peavey Sheffield cab now but
would like for Peavey to make a stereo 212
using the same speaker that's in the Nashville 112. Ball is in your court Mike Brown.

IMHO the VHT 2/90/2 is the most amazing sounding tube power amp for steel. Huge, huge low end and plenty of power. That said, I play 99% of my gigs with a tube amp that puts out 50 watts max, and it's plenty for me.....

Larry, let me know if you want to borrow mine for a month or so..... (I'll need to clear it with my son, who uses it for his bass rig)...

When we played with Kansas, the lead guitarist and fiddle player both used Peavey Tube Power amps that sounded warm and clean.

The VHT is my favorite, but for smaller gigs that I don't need a lot of power for , I have an older Peavey 60/60 rack mount that has 6L6 power tubes and 60 watts per side (stereo) that sounds great !!....Jim
