Silver Face Deluxe Reverb. I bought this from a guy whose name I've seen for some time on another board who seems well regarded. It was a hacked chassis that he restored and built a cabinet for. It had been modded to put reverb (and trem, I assume) in both channels and the tone stack on ch 1 had been altered.
It arrived with the reverb DOA. I just received the new tank and the reverb only works in ch 2. My question---both channels otherwise function properly. Does it seem plausible that something could go wrong with ch 1 in shipping that would knock out the reverb but leave it otherwise sounding ok? Or should I assume that this so-called mod doesn't exist in this amp and that it has the standard Fender config.
oh yeah--in ch 1, the tank boings when you kick it. Which would seem to indicate that the reverb is indeed active there, but that the 'send' isn't sending signal to the tank.
Is this enough info for one of you dangerous wizards to form an educated opinion? (I'd be happy to email the name of the seller--perhaps you know his name and can help me to intuit whether he's a straight-up guy (as I had thought) or a red-flag dealer. |

I am not sure how the mod was done. Looking at the newer Custom Vibrasonic schematic (basically the same preamp Twins, Deluxes, Supers, Pros, etc) they have accomplished it by paralleling the plates of the second stages V1 and V2. To add to both channel of yours would reguire a bit of rewiring. Perhaps a cold solder joint? The tank you got was bad as well? I have had tanks damaged in shipping, not unusual. These devices are sensitive and is it not unusual for FedEx and UPS to drop a carton 4 feet off the back of a truck or let it fall off a conveyor belt! |

It is common that you should hear the reverb when you shake the amp, even if it's not on that channel. The Reverb output level is set by the Reverb pot and there are no other adjustments besides the footswitch to turn it off. If you hear the reverb on Ch2 but not on Ch 1, it is pretty certain that the amp was not modified for reverb on both channels. I find it very unlikely that a "dual channel reverb" mod could get damaged in shipping. |
