A guy recorded us playing live the other nite. I didn't get a chance to talk to him. My experience with trying to record a job are less that enjoyable, horrible sound. I couldn't believe my ears when I heard what he did. Crystal clear, perfect balance. One of the guys in the group says he thinks he was usin a Sony Disc recorder. Seems he recorded straight to a C.D. All I saw were 2 mics side by side, one high and one low. How could this be possible. Does anyone know anything about these recorders

Charles, if you really liked the sound I can almost guarantee that it was because of the use and placement of microphones. I love to use a simple stereo pair of mics in front of a stage to capture the real sound. The sony recorder probably had very little to do with what you liked about it. You could probably use a DAT, CD recorder, or even minidisk and you would find similar results. It's all about mic placement. Also check and see what the mic's were.

I'm sure your right about the mics. I have tried recording live many times, with no success. I've tried with a 4track usin shure 57's & 58's. Still sounded terrible. I'll check with him about mics tho. What was amazing was the balance of everything.I've recorded in studio's that didn't sound no where this good. He had only two mics both on the far right of the stage.

It's the microphones. We just videotaped my daughters stage performance. The video dude is a good friend of mine. I tried a couple of my mikes on the stage and they were worthless. He put his $450 little electret on the center of the stage and you could hear whispers at the backstage. Vocals were clear as a bell. Awesome mic. I'll find out what he's using. |
