When recording an album onto my computer's hard drive, I'm using the "Line In" on the sound card.

The software program I'm recording through says to set the recording level high for the 'best' results; however, I find that even a setting of 3-4 seems too loud when the audio file is played back...I'm getting the distortion associated with volume levels being too high.

Has anyone else exprierenced this? I'm thinking I should even try to record around level 2 for decent results. If I go any lower, the "lows" may be too low. Is it normal for the line in to be this sensitive?

I'm using a 64 V PCI Soundblaster Card. Some have told me to upgrade to a newer card, but others tell me that the human ear really can't tell a difference between them.

Any help or advice would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Hmmmm. If you are looking at your recording level meter and it's not in the red at all... I'd suspect that your playback level is too high, and maybe the recording is fine. OR, a 'secondary' input level needs to be adjusted. Open windows volume control and check out all your levels for both playback and recording.
