I just got one for repair from a fellow Forumite. I must admit I am a tube amp guy and this thing was a bit intimidating.
Well it had no display or lights. I checked all the power supply voltages, all good. Several times it powered up with a frozen display. Once it came up running. I checked the 8Mhz crystal, it was not oscillating. The local Korg repair center said they no not fix the boards, just replace. This board was $115.00 and $40.00 for labor. This is almost the cost of the tuner. Well, I guess it is considered a throw away item!
Got in touch with a pla called "arts is Parts" owned by John Sprung (co-writer of the book, "Fender Amps The First Fifty Years"). They sell Korg parts. I got the oscillator in today and it is up and running.
I just wanted to pass this along to anyone who has seen this problem or may encounter it in the future. |

Ken, I hope the tuner you are referring to is the one owned by my buddy Tim McCutchen.
It is good news that you have been able to accomplish a repair on the DTR-1. I have been told they are considered a disposable unit, if it breaks just replace it. You might should get ready for a deluge of repairs it you have the time. I know Tim was gonna send his to you and I hope this is the one you are referring to. If so, I will be hearing from Tim soon!

Yes, it was Tim's. A tough job without a schematic or very little customer support from Korg. I guess I am just dumb enough to try anything once!

Ken,
That is good to know. My Dtr-1 has performed reliably for years. Now was that an 8MHz crystal tied to a microprocessor or was it a digital 8MHz oscillator with a crystal inside? It is pretty rare for a crystal to fail.
Anyway, I'll know what to check if mine goes down.

It was just a two lead, 8mhz crystal tied to the microprocessor. I had a hunch that was it, as it showed no oscillation on my scope.
