I recently got another guitar to mess around with, a Remingtion S12, with a George L pickup. I wasn't really happy with the sound, to my amateur ear, it was too mellow and bassy sounding, almost to the point of being muddy. Since I like the sound of my '81 Emmons, I asked Jerry Wallace if he could make a pickup that was closer to the Emmons sound. The new pickup dropped right in and what an improvement!
The first thing I noticed is the clarity of the sound, all the notes from high to low, were now distinct, even and clear. The low notes were clean and the overall change in the sound was amazing. It's not too shrill and not to mellow, it doesn't sound exactly like the Emmons, still doesn't have that edge or bite like the Emmons, but it's now an excellent sounding guitar. I'm more than happy with the pickup, it's nice to deal with someone like Jerry who has a great product and excellent service. And it looks nice too!

Jerry, do you make pickups for all makes of steels? or rewind them to your specs? How about the thousands of MSA's, Zb's,Sho-Buds? That ought to keep you pretty busy , if you did.....al |

Al , I build single coil pickups to fit, almost all current production brands of steels..Emmons, Shobud , Carter ,Fessenden ,Sierra, Mullen , Derby, Remington, GFI, MSA Millenium and several others..I can also rewind the original pickups if prefered..
If I dont have a template for a pickup , I can custom build one from a furnished pattern or "go-by"..
Yes, I can rewind just about any single coil pickup that was not epoxied over the coil..In addition to rewinding the brands listed above ,I have rewound Williams ,MSA , MCI, BMI, Kline, Marlin, Fender etc..

See Buy&Sell on True Tone pickups;
Got my Sho~Bud rewinds back from Jerry and dropped them in and all I can say is WoW!
His work is superb and the pickups have double the GREAT single coil Sho~Bud sound. I was going to buy a set of True Tone's but Jerry worked his magic on the orignals rewinding them to a 17.5 on E9th and 18.5 for C6th. Very sweet! Get a hold of Jerry if your looking for a good rewind or check out his True Tone line. You won't be sorry |

Jim, the DC on bill's 12 string is 17.5 to 18K ohm..It will vary a little with ambient temp, meter variations, etc.

ambient tempatures? Jerry is this a ploy to order winter and summer pickups? here in VT in March we do two things, change from snow treads to summer treads and swap our pickups, great marketing.....sorry couldn't resist |

Jim, I didnt think of the "winter"/ "summer" pickup approach but thats not a bad marketing pitch. The reason I mentioned ambiant temp variations and meter + & - accuracy is, If I say its 17,525 ohms and your meter say 17,310 ohms , this is why..The small .002" wire thats a mile or two long in a pickup coil , will change about 1 or 2% in DC resistance with only a small {5 or 10} degree change in the room temp..
Also , I have about 8 ohm meters around here of several different brands , and they all say something different..However , the small differences are small and dont have any noticable effect..
I wind by the # of turns , but I use the DC as a reference point and to insure the continuity of the coil.
But I like the summer/winter sales pitch and if you dont mind I will consider using your ideal.. With your permission of coarse.
P.S. Jim,do you happen to sale used cars?

Jerry, this is how Polish I am.....you wrote...Also , I have about 8 ohm meters around here of several different brands .....first time I read it I thought "how can you measure anything over 8 ohms with meters like that"....pretty bad huh? |

Jerry's quite right electricity is the passing of electrons through a medium; such as wire.
Different wire, different electron passage characteristics.
Different temperature in that medium and the electrons pass at a different rate.
Colder slower / hotter faster like any chemical reaction.
So Jerry when can I expect my
nitrogen cooled, cryogenic superconductor Sho-Bud summer season rewinds?

...when I touch these wires together, Igor, my creation will come to life!...ahh, ha ha ha ha ha ha...
...sorry, I couldn't resist...I'm intrigued...I've always felt that it was sacrilege to change out the original single coil pickups in an Emmons p/p, but I hadn't considered rewinding...how would I know if I could benefit from a rewind...or from a new Tru-Tone..in an Emmons p/p?... |

Pat, Yes when I touch the wires together, the hat on my head looks like a hot air ballon. ..I was wondering if any of you guys were thinking, "does he really wear all of that stuff when he builds pickups"..
The answer is NO..I actully wire them in the nude but I didnt think Bob would go for me posting the pic.
If your P/P still sounds good and your happy with it , I would leave it as it is..The Emmons bobbins are well built and usually hold up well for many years..
I do wind my coils a little different than Emmons, However whether mine or theirs sounds better is a matter of personal preference and opinion..
