I saw a new reissue of Leon McAuliffe recordings on the Jasmine label.
"TAKE IT AWAY THE LEON WAY" http://www.elderly.com/recordings/items/JASMINE3514.htm

Can anyone who's heard it describe the music?
He's a great player, but sometimes his music is a little to "commercial" for my taste.
If these are not his best recordings, what would you say are? (Under his own name, I mean...) thanks!--Joel

i am reasonably sure this is stuff from leon's own "cimarron" label, recorded either late 50s or early 60s when i suppose leon was without a major label.

i have the the cimarron stuff on 45s, but haven't played it for a while. if it is the cimarron material, it is less schmaltzy than his lps on capitol and dot.

some jasmine releases have material from radio shows, so there is a possibility that some or all of this cd is radio material never released on 45s. i have not been able to confirm it yet. but at least some of the titles match up to what was released on cimarron.

come to think of it, the cd has 27 tracks, and i don't think there were 27 issued songs on cimarron, so the cd may well be at least partially radio.

to each his own, but i think his best stuff was with wills. go wallow in the bob wills boxed set on bear family. i know i do. songs like "little girl go ask your mama",etc. mostly 1930s.

the best stuff under his own name for my taste was for columbia, beginning in the late 40s. with jimmy hall, leon, or billy walker singing. there was a 1980s LP of this stuff, but i don't think any cds yet.

he also did some fine 78s in the 40s for the majestic label which have yet to be reissued. a san francisco outfit was going to put it out on a cd, but ran into problems and it never happened. songs like "tulsa straight ahead", "cowboy christmas song" and i think "twin guitar boogie", etc.

the later stuff is pretty tame.

Joel:
I posted a thread a couple of months back on this very topic, but my thread sank like a lead shot (sniff-sniff: that hurt my one remaining feeling!). I've got the record in question, and I don't think it's schmaltzy - it sounds a lot like the Wills band of the same era. They may have been recorded in the fifties, but these guys were still playing/living in the forties. I don't think you'd be disappointed with it.
