Topic: ProFexII and Amps |

| Question for the working Steel players out there. If you use a ProFex and a peavy 400 series amp or what ever amp you may choose do you plug into the normal Hi Imp input or do you direct to the power amp in and by pass the eq in the amp. Your response is appreciated. Fred |

Fred,
Bypass the EQ because your Profex has all the EQ you'll need and it has a pre-amp that would cause hum because your amp already has a pre-amp. You can control it all from the Profex and not have to turn around to mess with the amp. |

| I appreciate the differing opinions...but I also plug into the instrument jack on the front of the amp. I do that so that I don't bypass the amp controls...all of the Profex pre-sets I have ever heard still needed some "tweaking" of the amp controls! www.genejones.com |

| Thamks fellas for you input. Thanks B0B for moving this where it should have been in the first place. I do have a video I got Jeff Newman on how to make your own presets and he does mention that many of the existing presets were done in steteo and if you play mono which I do you would probably want to do some adjusting. I have also found that most of the presets need a little eq for my ear when I go direct to the PA. I am in the process of finding my own preferred set and when I do I expect to go direct all the time. Thanks for your input folks. Fred |

Hey Fred Rushing! How the H$%% are you??? I guess I haven't seen you in at least ten years.
Fred's a big part of why I became a steel player in the first place. His playiing was a big influence on me. My family and I would often go hear him pick his Sho-Bud with the Hayriders on Saturday nights in Carlyle, Illinois at the old Ritz Theatre.
Remember those days Fred? LOL. Back when folks plugged a guitar into an amp and it sounded great. Now we spend a couple extra thousand dollars on electronic gizmos to make our guitar sound like it's plugged straight into an amp, LOL.
What are you playing these days? Come on out to Branson sometime. Tell the family I said Hi. If you see Jim Alexander, tell him I said hi too.
Oh Yeah, I agree that the Profex or any external preamp goes directly into the "power amp in" jack.

Well,
I know so little about what is "electronically" correct or wrong, but I do know what my "ears" tell me (and I don't mean this in a bullish or smart-ass way). I tried just about every concievable way to hook up my equipment. I've been using a Pro-Fex II for a number of years now (I've gone through the gaument of many different processors too, including most of the stomp boxes and many of the rack mounts) and I like plugging into the front of the amp best. To my ear I can just "shape" the sound/s that I'm looking for better. I've heard other guys use any number of other ways to set it up and most of them sound fine to me. But, I just like the front better,,,,,right or wrong.

I am with Bobby on that one myself. Technically it is incorrect. But if noboby catches you at it, it's OK!!
I have used a Profex and now a Transtubefex with my Peavey and old Fender amps. I like the extra warmth provided by the hotter signal. The old Blackface amps had a notoriously weak preamp (due to the gain loss of the tone controls) and this helps really warm it up! I found the Nashville a lot warmer to my ear when pushed this way too. This maybe not the best arrangement for recording, due to the extra noise of a preamp driving another preamp, but it sure sounds good live. If I get too much preamp gain, I jkust use jack #2, which is padded aboyut -6dB. |
