The frist Peavey Deuce was solid state. They addvertised it as a Steel amp(120 watts R.M.S.) with a 15" EV. They also made that in a 2x12" version. That was the frist good steel amp I ever had. The latter Deuces were hybrids, with solid state preamp and tube output. I never tried any of those.

Hi Perry, I used to have a hybrid deuce with the 2x12's.I had it new in 1979 It was the first amp I used with steel (sho-bud) at that time. It worked really well and always sounded sweet with lots of headroom. I also played guitar through it. Unfortunately, it died when i upgraded the valves for Groove Tubes, I still miss it.If you find a clean one buy it..

I recently spotted a Deuce at a pawn shop here. I didn't look that closely at it because it had 2 12's. I took a quick look in the back and it had what appeared to be 4 6L6 tubes (or something along those lines). I didn't see any preamp tubes, but then again, I didn't really look that close. Is there anything else that would tell me if it were all tube? This one had the silver looking knobs. What would be a good price?

Thanks
David

Dave , Peavey only made to two versions of Deuce. The original All Transistor, then the second Hybrid. But I don't remember if the Hybrids were transistor or IC premaps. But did have 4 6L6GC output tubes.

Hmmmm, I may just have to ride by there and take a second look at it. I've got 2 amps already, so I don't really need a 3rd one but, if the price is right, who knows.

I had a Peavey Artist once that had 4 6L6's for power, a solid state preamp, and a 12" Spiderweb Black Widow. It sounded really good with a steel. I gave it away to someone that needed it worse than I did.

I have had a Duece, a Mace and an Artist. All were hybrid amps. The Artist was as warm as the Mace and Deuce. Either will out power a Twin, hands down. The tone is excellent, IMHO. $250.00 with stock stamp frame speakers and the Automix footswitch and up to $300 or more with Black Widows. The early version had tremolo and the later 70's model had a great phase shifter. If you have a strong back and arms, the Mace is an even more powerful amp at 160 watts RMS (as opposed to 120 watts fro the Duece) and sports 6 each 6L6GC tubes (it was the amp of choice for Leonard Skynard Group).

I have been working with a guitar player in my band for 2 years and he uses a Duece with 4-6l6 power tubes. He said he has been using this amp for 20 years and it certainly has enough power and sounds great.

This really kills me to state this. Although I had been an exclusive Fender Twin guy for ever, I played in a band for many years with a good friend who came home from NYC ( Manny's ) with a Peavey Duece, ( he too was a Twin guy ) the hybrid model 2 x 12. It reall was exceptional. great sustaining tone for the Gibson 335 which my friend was playing, excellent bottom end and very loud..it appeared to have more headroom and volume than my twin and it did really cut very well in loud bandstand situations. I have seen a few around the pawn shops and I have always thought they were quality amps. I did not know that they had one with a single 15 though..now that would be curious...Could this be another excellent choice for those of us who double on Steel and Tele' to carry only 1 amp ?

I used one with Black Widows and also a Mace with black Widows for steel and guitar. Yes, they will cut it!
I just found a Mace VT with Black Widows back in Kentucky. It even has the footswitch for channel selecting and combining plus original Black Widows (with the Spider Backs). It will be here in a week. I'll give you guys a report on it when I get it here!
