Pvy vs Evans

Post by Sonny Jenkins »

I'd like to hear some comments/comparisons between Nashville 400 w/mod and Evans amps from someone who has used BOTH!

I've had both. They are both equally good. It comes down to personal choice. The kind of speakers you put in the amp will also make a difference.

I see it this way,
It's like comparing apples to oranges,or Fords to Chevy's. I've played every type of amp you can think of with the exception of Randall and they all have something and lack something the others have.
Although I've never owned a Peavey that's had a mod done to it I can say that from MY experience that they are the most reliable amp on the market. That's not to say the others are not reliable just that I've had less down time from Peavey amps and no I'm not a Peavey endorser.
My all-time favorite amp is the Sho-Bud single channel and I hope to own one again someday. Even if the power is not up to todays standard[I don't like to play loud anyway].
The bottom line is play them both and see which one sounds best to YOU and you'll be happy, but remember your ears and tastes change with time.

How about the best of both worlds? An Evans preamp into a reverb of your choice and into the power amp in of your Nashville? And L@@K, there's one for sale on Buy and Sell right now!!! LOL

God Bless, Michael T.

I agree with Kevin and Mike. It certainly is a personal choice, but every guitar has it's own "tone" personality, depending on the brand, amplifier used, and most importantly, the pick-up. Change any one of those three, and you will see a tone signature change in your sound. Many of us love the old Nashville-400 with LeMay Super-Mod or the factory mod installed. To my ear, it then has an enhanced low-end and cleaner highs. The early Evans Fet-500LV small cabinet models made during the Darrell Stevens era are also highly respected, as are the current SE-200HV series. From what I've read on this Forum, several "name" players have used a Peavey Black Widow speaker installed in their Evans amplifiers. Someday I hope to try that combination, but for now, I'm mostly playing my old Sho-Bud single channel for the clubs, and a Nashville-1000 for the large room venues.

I have both a PV1000 and a '93 Evans FET 500 LV SE made my Darrell Stephens. They BOTH sound good to me. I find that when I use my Evans for a month or so, and THINK I'm beginning to sound Yukie, I can switch to my PV1000 and SEEM to sound better, and visa versa. Image

I've run into the same type sound problem! For a while, I get my best sound by using my Walker S.S.Pre-Amp into the Pwr-IN on my 1000's, and then all of a sudden I get a better sound by just going directly into the front of my 1000's, eliminating the S.S,Pre-Amp. I don't know which changes, my Amps or my ear!(preferences) "Big John" http://community.webtv.net/KeoniNui/doc http://community.webtv.net/KeoniNui/doc0

I used an FET-500 for a couple years and thought it was the best sound I could get. The band then bought me a Nash 400 (NO MOD) and I couldn't get the sound I was looking for. I then bought a Session 500 and WOW!
I needed some cash and sold the 500 and went back to the 400. Took me about 2 months to get happy.
Recently, I played a gig and took along the Evans. Wish I had had the 400! I really can't explain why.

I've had an FET 500 that Darrel made back in '90 (the first one with a tweed cover, they thought I was nuts). If I have to be loud and traditional, it's my first choice, but I just got my Christmas Trees back from being restored to spec, and with the Altecs, they rule.

Had to drop in here for what it's worth. I started out with 2 Nashville 400's and never was really happy with the sound. Finally bought a Evans SE 150 and, albeit it is a little weak in the reverb department, it is fixed with a Boss GX 700 in my rack. Bottom line is I play the Evans and keep one Nash 400 for a back up. For me, and this tone thing is very subjective and personal, the Evans is clear and clean and the Nashville is somewhat muddy to me.
Hi to you all, Steve
