As I write the lovely sounds of Felix Mendelssohn and His Hawaiian Serenaders, "Paradise Isle," Harlequin CD162 are playing over my computer. There is some terrific playing by English steelers I was not familiar with. Great 20-page booklet with some cool old photos. Highly recommended.

Bob,
I have this new CD reissue also. It's pretty cool stuff. There is another Felix Mendelsohn CD that was reissued a few years back, you can get it from Elderly Instruments. I'm pretty sure there are no duplicate tunes on that CD.
Coincidence? I noticed that the Mendelsohn CD cover photo looked very similar to a R Crumb and the Cheap Suit Seranaders LP cover photo... the whole band on a big stage backed by a thick velvet curtain with hula maidens flanking the bandstand. Probably Bob Brozman or R Crumb had an original LP or 78's by Mendelsohn and got the idea for the shot.
If you like this type of material I highly recommend the Harlequin reissues of a few years ago... "On A Coconut Island", "On the Beach at Waikiki", "Tickling the Strings" and
I think 3 or 4 more titles.
Bob... if you like this type of material you should of been at the HSGA Joliet convention last weekend, you would of been in heaven. Next year for sure.

I think the steel guitarist was probably Harry Brooker who was with Felix for many years. Of course there were many others who came and went. If you want some really authoritive info on that band, you should snail John Marsden in Sheffield. I'll give you his address if you e-mail me. |

Gerald and Keoki,
The other Mendelssohn album is Harlequin CD93. Details are on the Interstate Website noted above. The booklet with CD162, which contains 20 pages of detailed band and personnel history, was written by Kealoha Life, a long-time member of the group.
Of the 26 selections on CD 162, Harry Brooker plays steel on 7, Sammy Mitchell on 6. Both do a great job.
I have a couple of other Harlequin Hawaiian reissue CDs and both are great. My kind of label!
Gerald, I would love to make it to HSGA in Joliet. Maybe next year.
Best,
Bob
