I record my steel direct to a Roland Digital
Recorder.
If I wish to dub in my voice the mike(s) I have don't seem to have the sensitivity to do a good job unless you get right up real close. Then we get the "P's" poppin and the
breathing noise.
Anyone got a suggestion to get around these
problems?

Hi Roy,
I have the same problems when connecting a mic directly to the Roland VS series recorder. I use a tube mic pre-amp (just the cheapest ART unit) to adjust the mic signal before it gets to the Roland. This allows me to run the VS input level lower and boost at the ART pre-amp. This should take care of the 'peaking' levels on the Roland. |

Roy,
I know what you mean. I use a yamaha home studio recorder and the input pre-amps are ok, but not ok. I had to eat the mic.
I tried a dbx 3?? tube pre-amp, and it was just what I needed. I can use a Shure Beta 58 or borrow a nice condensor mic, and they sound great. This is a rack mount 2 channel tube powered preamp. Cost around $400? Guitar Center. Do a search on the web for dbx electronics. (lower case dbx is their logo)
I use the preamp for lots of instruments as well. Acoustic guitars with pickups, acoustic bass with a pickup.
Hope this helps.

Get yourself a popper stopper. An acoustic
transparent piece of nylon stretched over a
ring that mounts in front of your mic. I have
used hose on a knitting ring and that works
just as well. |

I also use an old Shure mike line adaptor to change the low Z mike to high Z, no problems with gain on my Roland VS-880. I think Radio Shack still carries thoses inline mike adaptors in a female or male 3 pin to 1/4" phone.Nylon panty hose over a frame of wire from a coat hanger fixed the "P" pop as well. |
