There is a 1975 Peavey Artist (tube) amp for sale in my area. Priced at $160. Cosmetically it looks to be in good condition. It has a 15" (not major brand) spkr in it. Anyone out there have any experience playing steel through one of these? Good or Bad?
Thanks
Dennis

Dennis, pretty good amp for six string. Mine has the BW spkr. Just doesn't cut it for steel, though. Not enough body, I guess. I've tried it several times...never been happy with the results....just can't dial in the sound you need for steel.
FWIW I have seen these in stores w/the original spider BW speaker for around $200 to just above depending on condition.

I started to buy one a few years ago and have the same opinion. Seemed like a natural, with the BW speaker but the fatness just wasn't there. It was pretty shrill. Peavey makes great tube amps that work well for guitar.

To my ears, the wide bodied PV amps are best sounding for steel. Heard a Vegas amp the other night onstage that sounded great.

I had one back in 77, are you sure it's a 15" in it mine was a cheap 12", the 12" didn't have the sound a good steel amp needs, I'm thinking about putting a 15" in my twin,, the Artist is known as a hybrid, solid state preamp and 4 output tubes power end, like the musicman amp, I would consider it a fair to good deal, maybe they will take a little less

It's a sweet amp In that same era of hybrids were two other awesome amps that will give you that warm bottom, the Deuce and the Mace. Both were 2-12 amps and had Black Widow options available. I have had both and the bottom was comparitable to the Session 400 (which I also had back then). The early models had tremolo and the later ones had a great phase shifter, never heard a better phase in an amp!
