| I just picked up a Peavey Classic 50-212 on the recommendation of a guitar playing friend who has been a big fan of this amp for a long time. I also saw a reference in a Bobbe Seymour post calling it "Peavey's best kept secret" for PSG. It has plenty of volume for my purposes, a decent reverb and it sure beats a Twin Reverb for portablility. In fact, I think it compares very favorably with the classic Twin sound. Still playing around with tone, however. Does anyone have any recommendations for settings? How about an outboard EQ? I am playing (if you can call it playing!) an all-original Sho-Bud Pro 1 through it. Maybe Mike Brown has some comments? Thanks for your feedback. |

Mark, thank you for asking and for your purchase of the Classic 50 amplifier. I am a user of the Classic 100 amplifier with the Classic 410E cabinet, but I don't use if for steel guitar, so I don't have any recommended settings for you. However, the EQ in this amp is a simple "classic" style, meaning that there is LOW, MID, HIGH and PRESENCE controls. At extreme settings, some frequencies can overlap. The idea is to turn the controls until it sounds good. Until I sit down and play through my Classic 100 with a steel, I recommend that you "play it by ear". I would ask Bobbye Seymour for his recommended settings. Please note that there is a BRIGHT input jack which boosts the highs by 12dB @2kHz. that will affect your tone as well.

I use a classic 50 four ten combo for six string primarly but have use it for practice on my pro 11.It gets a good classic twang but I have to be careful not to push the ten inch speaker to hard to piont of breakup.yours being twelve inch speakers, it may not be a problem. I have recently retubed the EL 84s with the solvetek blue labeled(cleanest) tubes and found i like these very well. Setting your amp is subjective but as for myself for steel, I usually start with bass control pretty high then add highs and presence to taste...

I have one of these that I use for regular six string. I recently retubed it with JJ/Tesla tubes and put Alltone speakers in it. I have used it at practice sessions for my steel with the following setttings:
Normal Channel
Treble 3
Bass 8
Mids 8
Presence 6
Reverb to taste.... Mine is the 2x12 version btw. It sounds great for my purposes!

| I think they sound better than a Twin, due to the EL84's instead of 6L6's....warmer. The high-end on these amps can kill ya', so, you gotta' pull back on the prescence and treble. Turn it up, and control from your volume pedal, and you'll find that 'sweet spot' easy....these are just great sounding amps, and I've said before, 'mic it..or use two'. Two will give you the most luscious big, warm, clean and 'present' sound you're likely to hear this side of $15,000. |
