Does anyone use a compressor for steel? What type do you use, stomp box,rackmount?

Kenny, come over and try my system out. I have the Alesis 3630 rack mount compressor in my rack. I might even let you play my Williams.

I agree that when you are using a volume pedal, you are basically using a "manual compressor." Compressors are supposed to give you more sustain, but you do the same thing by bringing up the volume gradually on your pedal. If you want to use a compressor more like a limiter, then overdrive the compressor to the point that it hits its headroom on every note you pick. Now, you have a Mooney Machine! You will get that "chicken pickin" sound for single note west coast style.
