Howdy, I have a older JBL 15" speaker that started rattlin' on me. I removed it from the cabinet and inspected it, and found that a small portion of the glue had dried up and came apart on the voice-coil paper from the magnet. It's not a bad rattle, unless I really start honkin' on it.(A phrase use by my good friend John Rickard) Any help would be appreciated. It's a great sounding speaker. I'd like to start using it again. Thanks! "STEEL ROCKS!!!!" - Dougie

Dougie,

They make a special voice coil cement for this purpose. It is an awesome product, takes a while to set up but it won't ever fail on you. There is one hitch: this is strictly a commercial product, not available in stores, and I've only seen it in quart cans. If you have someone in your area who specializes in re-coning speakers maybe you can obtain a jigger-full from them.

The best way I've found to handle voice coil cement is with something similar to a wooden matchstick, a drop at a time. You will be amazed at the consistency, strength, and flexibility of this product. It is also useful for other purposes such as sealing electronic components, like when you have to fish a lead from a transformer, etc. It can even be used in a pinch to insulate small areas of electronic wiring. Once in place it's there to stay.

Howdy, Thanks alot for the info! My JBL is a great sounding speaker. I wanted to start using it again, but I wanted to know for sure what kind of glue to use. I know the glue on it now is a yellow color. It wasn't a major rattle, unless like I said, I started HONKIN' on it , or playing my Bass through it. Thanks again for the info! -Dougie "Steel Rocks!!!!" P.S.-After you put the glue on, should you set anything on it for weight, to help it bond evenly? Thanks, D.H.
