...don't know if this has been mentioned in this Electronics section or not:
I'm seeking information on the center "Tone Selector" on my Webb 6-14 E amp. Positions 1 & 2 make no sense to me. Unless I use position 3 the amp seems totally worthless for practical playing when I'm attempting to set the other controls at any acceptable tonal quality level.
Neither of my three steel guitars will produce any acceptable quality of sound with this knob set on positions 1 or 2; no matter if I plug into low or high or where I set the other controls; but I can get some great sounds with it set on position 3.
Of course I use position 3; but what is the purpose of this control? I've had the amp for a few years and this is still very puzzling to me.
If someone tells me that one of the great players uses this amp with this selector set on the 1 position, I know I will sell everything and buy an acoustical HARP. I understand some of them even have pedals.

here's a previous post on Webb settings... http://steelguitarforum.com/Forum5/HTML/000144.html
Recalling from memory, at the tone selector, position #1 = tube sound, #2 = hybrid sound & #3 = solid state sound. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

You're right Mike.
The user's manual suggests that you begin with position 2, set the 3 tone controls at mid point, then adjust to get the sound you want.
I think the #2 position sounds very good, but most of the time I gravitate to the 3 position also. I also find I have to cut the treble down to between 2 & 4 depending on the circumstances - to my ear, it can be very shrill & piercing otherwise.
Hope this helps. |

Tommy White will probably answer this one but I believe he uses the center setting.
Maybe Tommy might find time to give us his settings. I found this info somewhere in the forum some time ago except he didn't say which jack he plugged into but I think I recall he used the center setting and presence control was wide open.

I have a Webb 614E combo that I cut the cab down to a head and I use it with a pair of EV-12L speakers. I think it sounds better with a single 12 for smaller gigs. I didn't care for the 15" JBL speaker and decided to try the 12 inch speakers when I read Tommy White uses his Webb with a 12 inch speaker.
The amp sounds warmer and responds better with the 12 inch speakers. |

I've always used the center setting. Position 1 sounds too trebly for me, and position 3 sounds too midrangy. In the center posion I can get all the bass I want without that thick midrange. |

At the Opry, we have the Web for our steels. Tommy White always gets a great tone from the Web using the position #2.As for me, the middle position was a little too thin in the mids for the sound I prefer. Playing Peavey amps for so many years, I am used to the Peavey type mid range. I found that by using the position #3 it gave me more of that type of mid. The other settings I set like I would set one of the older model Session 400 amps, hi's around 7-8 and the bass full. I cut some of the highest band of the Eq circuit to "darken' the sound a bit and give it a little "mellowness". This high band of the Eq circuit I would treat like the presence band on the Peavey. This works for me, your mileage may vary.

I, too use the middle position. The first position is too shrill, and the third is too dark. I leave the EQ off, and just use the tone controls to get what I want. I've been using a Peavey amp lately, but if I remember right, I set the bass on 7 or 8, mids on 2, and highs on 2 or 3, middle position. |

It verys from steel to steel as I've had 4 webbs and great amps. At church I couldn't get the sound I wanted until I shut off the eq on the right and used pos. 3 and thats the way I play it every week Zum E-66. I have played a lot of outside shows it's been three years ago as I quit the band but I used the 2 pos. and set the eq knobs on the right of the amp all close to zero turned on the switch and then tweaked the tone from there. None of the 5 knobs were far off of the zero but to be honest I forgot what P/U's I had in that Zum at the time, but I got a great sound. These sittings were taken off Tommy's amp in St. Louis 97 or 99. I told Tommy I wrote down what each knob was on to try at home he said good I might need them after while because I don't exactly remember how I had it sit. Those sittings all the way across the amp I had but could have lost in my house fire in 98. In one of SGWM Robbie Turner and Junior have their sittings dont know what issue but it is in one of them. Hope this helps. Bill Taft
