Can someone tell me the difference between the two tuners? Do they both tune to Hertz and Cents. Which one would be better to use with steel in mind? Thanks Eddie |

Eddie, only the DTR-1 has the hertz mode.Other than that, they are pretty much the same.I use the hertz mode because it has more sensitivity. In the cents mode a note will show "green"or on pitch.Switch to the hertz mode and it will show some slight + or -. However,in the end I use the DTR-1 to get my overall pitch and then fine tune to my ear.The DTR-1 or 2 are great on stage in low light situations where you need a fast, quite touch up to a string or two..

My very limited exposure to these two tuners has me wondwring about the accuracy required for chromatic tuning. Seems the "440" tuner's can do well with them, but tuning + or - to 440 looks to be a best-guess situation. Am I missing something here?

Steve...thanks for the thread. Looks like I'm not the only one with reservations on the unit. I think I'll stay with the needle.

I don't know Roger. It's a really nice unit (and I still know where to put my hands on one new for $250, if anyone remains interested), and in hindsight, since I got hold of mine, I have spent a whale of a lot of time looking at my own tuning procedures.
The upshot is - for me - that I have become more comfortable now with a method of tuning that's sort of a hybrid between Ricky Davis' 'A440', -b0b-'s Non-Critical Tuning, and Buddy Emmons' harmonic tuning method. I use elements of all three, and basically only use the tuner to get 2-3 notes, all of which are either referenced to 0 cents, or to -5 cents. So, it's a no brainer on the tuner, even without a needle, and I feel like I have finally found a method of tuning this thing that I can actually live with.
I may post it sometime.
Good luck,
Steve
